Windows 10 start up menu not working

About two days ago my windows 10 start menu disappeared - no list of programs, not tiles just blank. Edge seems to have disappeared too. Otherwise everything else seem ok.

I've googled the problem and it seems reasonably common. I've tried various fixes including trying to create a local user (which I think I was anyway) but nothing seem to put this right. I tried to 'recover' the system back to the last update (last Friday) which probably coincides with the start of the problem. But the recovery didn't work (sorry didn't note the reason out of frustration!)

Has anyone any bright ideas please? This is first time I've had a major problem with Windows 10 since becoming a user what 12 months or so ago when it was new?

Thanks
Wizzer

I've had the same experience. Twice.

Usually, the problem is a corrupted profile, and you have to create a brand new user profile (assuming you are following best practice and not using your admin profile for day to day use of the computer), You've tried already with no results.

Corruption of key Windows files is still likely.

    Using your Admin account:

Start Powershell from the command line and run:
    sfc /scannow

(ctrl-alt-del and select run new task - if you cannot see the start button)

If Windows Resource Protection reports some things it cannot fix, try:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

This should download good versions from Microsoft to replace any corrupted files.

You can also try restarting Windows Explorer (which gives you the start button) yourself by bringing up the Task Manager (ctrl-shift-escape I think, not using Windows at the moment, so doing this from memory), selecting the process tab and finding Windows Explorer.

I think you lost a 'D' there and it should be:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Thank you I have partial success start menu is back but the tiles are still missing !!

All a bit weird though - can't access the Store, Edge missing and in the start menu there seem to be a number of programs which I thought I'd uninstalled ages ago!!

What worked for me eventually was to to run windows powershell under my own user and then type in this script:

    \Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"}

It brought all the tiles/window apps back into the start menu and then I was able to pull them back into the extended start menu space
