Can't log in to self-assessment

in Cutting tax
Just tried to log-in to self-assessment and (without any notification) the login has completely changed. Old ID and Passwords do not work, instead I'm directed to sign up to the new 'Government Gateway' service which requires jumping through a load of hoops to verify my identity (giving passport details then an automated phonecall with a code etc.).
Eventually I finally get a completely new ID and password, but when I log in using this, no Self-Assessment option! It just has PAYE which does not apply to me.
Eventually I find buried within the HMRC web-pages that if you already have a self-assessment account you do not need to create a government gateway account, just use the old log-in details. But they still don't work!
The only way I can get around it seems to be by requesting a new password for the self assessment ID by post. Will see if this works, as apparently I now have two ID numbers. What a mess!
Luckily after checking I think I don't have any payment on account to make by 31 July as my tax bill last year was less than £1k
Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Yep...been round in circles trying to log in.
I think they make it as hard as possible just so they can fine you, and their online support is next to useless...
