Hi - Apologies if this has been posted before but I just wanted to share a positive experience. I bought a 55 plate Meriva about 6 weeks ago and a week in started having problems with EPS failure which was pretty scary. Long story short I googled this and found a Watchdog youtube video highlighting this. I called General Motors/Vauxhall and they arranged to have the steering column assembly on the car replaced within a week and followed up with calls and emails to make sure I was happy:T:T

I brought a meriva second hand just last Wednesday, first time I drove it it done this not only scared me , but upset me as I only had it less than a day (shame it didn't do it on the test drive ). Today is Sunday and awful car done it 5 times now 4 of those were on the motorway .I've also contacted vauxhall who have said to take it to a specialist and get a diagnostics on it , if it proves to be that problem they will fix it for free.what I've read though is its the motor rather than steering column and fault comes back .hopefully they will fix it free then I can sell it .always had vauxhall in the past but with pas not eps .lost faith now .Maria

Maria, I had this problem in a previously owned by me Meriva. Fortunately still under warranty at the time.
There should be a fault stored, did the EPS light come on when the failures occurred?
The problem seems to be a faulty torque sensor which is an integral part of the steering column and not replaceable separately (stupid design)so the whole column has to be renewed for just a sensor!

Hi , yeah eps light comes on .takes about 3 attempts of restart to get it to clear as it will free one way but not the other , clear it then it happens again .motorway driving was fun ( not) 4 times in an hour and half .mines covered cause of low mileage but only if fault comes up on diagnostics. Totally silly and dangerous design which is a shame as the car drives lovely other than that, and fact I can relaxing whilst driving it .

There will be a fault stored then hopefully.
On mine the steering initially felt "strange". It would steer one way with what seemed over assistance and be harder to turn the other way. This happened intermittently three or four times and the supplying dealer could find no faults stored.
Eventually it did fail completely with an EPS light until the ignition was turned off and on which reset it. It is a horrible experience when it happens without warning. I am a fairly strong male and it took quite a lot of effort to turn the wheel at lower speeds.
About three weeks after the dealer fitted a new column the steering rack started making a groaning noise. Another known fault with this model. That required a new steering rack.
I experienced a few other problems including the paint peeling off the sills.
I did hang on to the car for a while but got rid at the first suitable opportunity.
Good luck with yours and yes, it does fix the immediate problem but will it fail again in the future?
It's a pity because I did like the car.
