Income support mortgage relief payments

Hi, I have recently been widowed, have been left with a mortgage, sadly there was no life insurance in place to pay if off, I have been able to claim widows parent allowance, but because I claim this I'm unable to claim income support..
I've been a housewife & have four children the youngest is 2, I'd be quite happy to get a job in time but at the moment I'm just not ready as it's only been 7 weeks since I lost my husband.
What I'm wanting to know is can I still claim mortgage relief if I can't claim income support? I'm unable to claim housing benefit as I have a mortgage..
Thanks

I'm not entirely sure about WPA, but with other benefits you can have an underlying entitlement to income support, and when housing costs are included in the calculation (at 13 weeks) you then become eligible for payments (made directly to your lender). I would apply for IS, expecting a nil entitlement letter, but also request that they send you an MI12 form (for claiming help with mortgage interest) and proceed to apply for that.
There may be a more streamlined way of doing it - someone else will no doubt know.0 -

Yes, do apply for Income support as you meet the eligibility requirements (lone parent with child under 5)
Also try putting your details into the benefit calculator here:

It should show if you are entitled to Support for Mortgage Interest.0 -
Thankyou, I used the turn 2 us calculator, it's telling me I'm entitled to income support & mortgage relief, I know I can't claim income support but fingers crossed I may still be able to claim mortgage relief..
I'm finding it hard to get my head round it all, having never claimed benefits before july when my husband was first diagnosed with cancer, the benefit system has not been an easy road, although I say that once it was all sorted we couldn't have been without it,
I've only posted on here a few times & it's been really helpful, I'm still trying to work out how to thank your posts, so bear with me..

Am so sorry to hear about your loss.
Just a thought is there a local charity who can help you in sorting out your benefit entitlement? You may even be able to tap into the cancer support services. I know we have a service at our hospital.

Contact you local citizens advice office and ask for a benefits check/ income maximisation check.
Your local authority are likely to have welfare officers who are employed to conduct similar checks.
Shelter can also offer advice and conduct a benefit check.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
Do find out whether your local authority has a welfare benefit adviser with whom you can discuss your situation and make sure that you are receiving all the financial assistance to which you are entitled.
At this very sad time, do accept support. http://www.careforthefamily.org.uk/Family-life/bereavement-support/widowed-young-support0
