Sure Thing Car Insurance

Has anybody had any experience of using Sure Thing for their car insurance?

I've never heard of them, but they're coming up a good 5-10% cheaper than any other quote I'm getting. Whilst cheaper is always a good thing, it does make me worry that they're some dodgy chancers.... Their website says they're underwritten by Zenith though.

Thanks!

  • So they are a broker and a quick look on their site shows that they are tiny as they are not authorised by the FCA/PRA directly but instead are just a representative of UK General Insurance who themselves are an intermediary, fairly small and mainly play in the niche markets.

Id suspect its standard products that they are selling rather than bespoke products given their size so a google of Zenith will give you the majority of the picture, only added element really is if you are paying by installments as I'd expect they'll be using a finance house rather than providing the credit themselves

New Broker that launched earlier this year, founded by some of the former Kwik Fit management team.

  • Cheap insurance seem fine until you want to claim where you start by giving your details and then get called back by a company I've never heard of called action something. I'm still arguing to get the car fixed. suppose you get what you pay for thankfully only go a couple of months til it expires.
  • I would advise everyone to avoid this company like the plague. I have always used the cheapest insurers but never had any claims.

Last year i was involved in a minor incident and had to deal to these people.. Now I realise why these guys are so cheap. They are absolutely useless. Always happy to talk when they want your money but want nothing to do with you or your claim. They will pass you around to several different companies who handle different aspects of the claim. Its confusing, frustrating and a massive waste of time. In the end i just gave up because i didnt want the hassle.

A few months later im told the company they used to underwrite was going in to liquidation, but they could smoothly transfer to another company at the same monthly repayments. So I agreed.

A few weeks later i was sent a letter telling me my insurance is being raised from 55 pounds a month to an eye watering 168 pounds a month ! I was told that because I had a claim still in dispute i had to pay the old policy to the end and my new policy with an increased premium! Id had enough, i just wanted to cut all ties with this company.

I spoke to an adviser and evetually agreed a cancellation price 297 pounds. I very clearly asked him if i pay this are we done? I owe you no more money? I was told thats it, no futher payments required. Not even 2 weeks later im sent a letter telling me they will take 51 pounds for a cancellation fee. If its not paid they will pass the debt to a recovery agency with more charges.

The dispute still continues.DO YOURSELF A HUGE FAVOUR AND AVOID THIS COMPANY !YOU MIGHT SAVE A FEW QUID AT FIRST BUT IN THE END YOU WILL PAY FOR IT AND MORE
  • I had a policy with this company. I moved home four months into the policy half a mile down the road. They raised by monthly direct debit from 25 a month to 55 and charged me 60 admin fee. I swallowed this as at the time the move was stressful enough and I thought I just wouldn't reinsure with them ever again. But in June this year I sold my car. I no longer needed the insurance. and even though my direct debits were up to date and I was not in arrears they wanted next two months policy money plus another 60 admin fee. I told them that was ridiculous and refused to pay it. I now have the threat that my debt has been increased and referred to a recovery agency. This agency has since called me and have been quite verbally agressive asking me if I read the terms and conditions etc and were very rude when I said I thought the terms were unfair and wanted to refer them to the ombudsman.

Do I need to follow this through with the ombudsman, can they make me pay this unreasonable amount or will they send the bailiffs in?
  • Hi MissP. You need to be a bit careful that you don't end up with a cancelled policy on your record (especially if the broker/insurer cancels). I know you were paying monthly but you weren't insuring monthly. You took out an instalment plan that was effectively a loan agreement for an annual policy. This is an important distinction. You bought an annual policy and suspect that ST are within their rights and that the ombudsman will support them.
