Old Abbey National Credit Card PPI

Hi
I once had a credit card with Abbey National which was subsequently taken over by MBNA. I claimed for mis-sold PPI on MBNA and my complaint was upheld.
I received a letter from Santander asking me for confirmation of the Abbey National credit card, ie send them copies of statements from 2000 - 2003 (pre-MBNA).
I am meticulous in keeping copies of anything which I send out (secretarial training at its best) but I do not hoard bank statements, etc and I answered the first letter to this effect.
I have now received a letter from Santander saying that as I did not reply to their letter they are closing the matter. Furthermore, the account number they are quoting is the settled MBNA account number, and not the Abbey CC number.
I don't know whether to refer this to the FSO or respond to them directly.
I have no idea when or how I applied for the card or whether I originally had PPI. I know the account number as I have a spreadsheet with all my cc's listed.
Cheers!
