Northgate van hire kept deposit
Hello,
i am after some advice if possible..
i hired a van from northgate on Thursday, It was heavy raining and the guy never showed me the damage to the van. He said it was damaged both sides showed me a diagram and said they probably will just check the interior because of the damaged sides.
to my shock when i brought the van back they are saying there is more damage to the van and kept my deposit.
i feel like i have been robbed i didnt have an accident what rights do i have? can anyone help?

Hi joe
If you believe the van hire company owe you money (i.e. your deposit), you can make a claim against them in the small claims court.
See https://www.gov.uk/make-court-claim-for-money/overview
You would submit your case, and they would submit theirs, and the court would decide which is most likely to be true.
But before doing that, try sending them a formal letter stating that the van was not damaged during your hire period, and requesting your deposit back.
To strengthen your case, you could also ask for copies of 'damage reports'/'vehicle condition reports' from previous hires of the same van, to see what they say about damage.0 -
thanks ... i sent them a letter this morning.0

Unfortunately, it's not up to them to show you any damage on the van. Regardless of what you were told you should have checked it yourself, raining or not.
If the vehicle sheet you received when you hired the van didn't show any damage where there was damage, then you are going to find it very hard to fight this.0 -
When I rented a van from Northgate they took pictures at the handover.
When I returned it there was an issue with a dent that wasn't recorded on the handover notes - they looked at the pictures from the previous hires and realised it was already there but we'd both missed it.
Did they go through any past pictures while you were there?Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -
In the days of Camera phones, there is little reason to fall for this age old scam.
Photograph the van/ car in detail and make sure they see you doing it.Be happy...;)0 -
Hi joe298487, I'm just wondering if you had a response regarding this as this company are trying to do the exact same thing to my cousin. Did you get anywhere?0

Considering he's not posted since March I doubt you're going to get a response.0
