Help with MP3

I use my ultra-cheap Tesco 256 MP3 for live music that I've changed to MP3 format on the nch site. Don't get many tracks on though, only about 10.

Now, I'm trying to add another track and have deleted others to make space, however I'm still just getting a 'disk full' message. I've now (in sheer frustration!) deleted just about everything else and it still won't load. So, then I gave up and tried to load the old ones back, but now they won't go on either!

I'm really curious now and want to know why - Is it because the player is a cheap one and worn out? btw, how do you look at the space you have left, I assumed it would be under file/properties, but that isn't active?

You should get around 30 high quality mp3 tracks on a 256MB player. Doesn't sound as if your tracks were compressed at all. Where they extra-long(more than 5 minutes each)?

Are you deleting them on the mp3 player or on your pc. I find the easiest way is to plug the mp3 player into the usb slot on my pc and it comes up as an extra drive. I right click on the drive and open it. Then I delete what I wish and drag in what I wish.

Incidentally you should get a lot more than 10 tracks onto the mp3 player. What bitrate are you setting the mp3's at. 128kps is more than enough - in fact you will not notice much difference between 96kps and 128kps and the smaller the number the more tracks you will get onto your player

Should we guess what the 'nch site' might be?

Anyway, how does the player connect to the computer? Is a new drive letter produced...?

Open 'My Computer' and then right click on the removable drive. Then click on properties and it'll tell you what capacity is on the disk.

Sorry nch is just something I found by accident, it's just called nch switch, it's part of the freebie software - wavepad - I use to take the music from minidisc.

Yes, I plug in the mp3 and it opens as E-drive. I delete and load tracks just by right-clicking and deleting/pasting - that's about as much as I can manage!

I thought I should probably get more tracks on, but now it seems I can't get any! It did look like the tracks were compressed to some level anyway as the mb changes. The ones I record tend to be between 30-120 mb after they've been compressed. The time is usually between 3-15 mins each.

Is there better software I should use? I like this one as it's pretty idiot-proof to use!;)

Thanks Phantom, :T just done that and can see why it won't fit as the track is 114mb and space left only 79. I've also looked at the few tracks I have left and they are about 3-4 mb each, so it looks like I'm not managing to compress my latest tracks properly - even though it seems to be going through the process. So I need a lesson in successful mp3 conversion! (for idiots!!)

If you have Windows Media Player or Real Player installed, they can do the conversion for you.

It looks like you already know how to copy from minidisc to a wav file on your PC - but there is a simple guide here if you want it -

That tutorial uses Xing to convert from WAV to mp3 - i suggest you try something like the Lame encoder instead. See -

As others have said, make sure you are encoding at a suitable bitrate - try 128 to start with.

I've got media - didn't realise it would do the trick!

I've just worked out how to do this, I think, and am now busy converting!:D
