credit card insurance (not payment protection)

A friend has just discovered his wallet's been nabbed and the thieving scum is on a spending spree, so he's having to phone around all the people he has cards with.

It made me think about the credit card protection offered with most cards by the likes of Sentinel. I've only found a brief discussion about the prices on MSE chat, and the only article seems to be about payment protection (conclusion - it's rubbish).

I thought credit card liability is limited to £50 and most will waive that provided you've not been stupid? What about store cards? Is it worth investing in insurance - which seems to average about £60 for a couple's cards for 3 years, or about £15 pp/pa) just to be sure? Anybody have opinions or can point me to any info I've missed?
