  • There's not really any answer to this question, as any attempt just leads to more questions.

    In a desperate attempt to be helpful, I can tell you one thing. However you set about it, the project will end up over budget and behind schedule. They always do. It's the law.

    Yeah i know i want to do it as cheap as i can, its an idea i got when i was travelling the world as i used the net alot to find places to stay and usually you would have to look at 4 or 5 different sites to find places i just want to create one website for travellers where they could find 90% of the town / city hostels/hotels/B&B in one place with all their contact details are pricing i would make my money by charging the hostel a yearly listing fee to have their information on the site

  • Don't want to sound negative, but you have a hugely ambitious plan there to knock up with your 'very basic knowledge'. Hotels are bombarded with companies asking them to advertise on websites - you already have thousands of competitors. Take a look at sites like tripadvisor.com for a similar concept -- you would literally need a budget of millions to compete with them.

    W3C has alot of basic tutorials and there are various books that show you how to make websites from simple pages to advanced shopping systems. though by the sounds of it you may be better paying a company to create and maintain your website.

    I agree with ncrossland, you will have a lot of competition.

    Even if you get your web site up and running, no mean feat even if you are skilled, you will still have a major problem.

    Getting the hotels/hostels to advertise on your site.

    They won't advertise on your site unless you have a lot of visitors, you won't get a lot of visitors until you have a lot of advertisers.

    You'll have a hard job getting them to advertise on your site, even for free, as they will have done that on many sites in the past and got no visitors from them.

    Send them an email offering free, or cheap advertising and they won't even read it. They've already seen a million similar emails.

    Sorry to pour water on your idea, but I do think it's a none starter even for a skilled web master with money behind him.

    The simple facts are;

    Nobody will advertise with your site, free or paid, unless you have the visitors to make it worth while.

    Nobody will visit your site unless you have enough advertisers to make it worth their while, and even then you will have to go out and find the visitors then make them visit your site.

    Whatever anyone else says, getting visitors to come to your site is the hardest part of being a webmaster.

    If you really want to do it, do it for fun and don't expect anything back from it.
  • You're going to need more than basic knowledge for this, you're going to need good knowledge of html, css, xml, php, sql and thats before you get into having to get the traffic and hotels/hostels signing up to your plan. This isn't something you'll be able to knock up in a week or so, if you have little to no knowledge of these languages it will probably be at least 3-6 months to get this up and running properly.

    I am building a website myself and I use Serif Webplus 10. This requires no knowledge of Html and is more like using a Desktop Publishing package.

    You can get more information on the Serif's website here:http://www.serif.com/webplus/webplus10/index.asp.
