Spending 2 nights in Reno on our hols in summer. Want to do the Reno to Lake Tahoe tour. Has anyone done it? Is it worth the money or should we take the car and drive ourselves?

Firstly let me say how jealous I am :p

Spent a week in Reno a few years back ( which was waaaaaaaaaay too long by the way )... but Lake Tahoe / Carson City / Virginia City were excellent.

We booked a tour in resort with a local tour company and an excellent guide.

I stayed in Lake Tahoe for a few days last year with family (cant remember which side sorry!). We didn't do any tours so I can't help you with that, I would just say to get some headache tablets as when we drove up I got the worst altitude headache that made me feel really ill so I would just be prepared! I went to CVS and got altitude tablets when we got there and had to take them a few times during my stay, and so did another girl I was with.

    Drive

I was out there at the beginning of March, mind you it was -10c and 4 foot of snow, stayed in Stateline and drove up to Reno via Carson city and Virginia city.

Carson city was pretty much like any small town/ city, Virginia city is a whole different ball game. The main street is right out of the old west, really worth spending a couple of hours wandering around. You must visit the old saloons, The bucket of blood was our favourite, got the T-shirt. The train was not running, but there is an old west steam train goes into the Comstock area, where all the gold was found.

The drive to VC from Reno, go through the mountains for a pretty spectacular drive, heading south from VC towards Carson city allows you to stop at a small bar for coffee and loads of stories from the owner in Silver city, and further south just before you hit highway 50 into Carson city is the chocolate nugget sweet factory, they make allsorts of sweets on the premises with a huge variety of saltwater taffees, a couple of novelty gifts were had including the 'original fartless BBQ sauce'?

We ate in the Carson Nugget casino which was very popular with the locals.

I expect the bears will be awake, I had friends come across some sitting in the middle of the road outside South lake Tahoe.

My only dissapointment, being of a certain age and watching Hoss and little Joe on a Saturday night (probably in black and white) is that the Ponderosa ranch from Bonanza is not open to the public. It was purchased some years ago to be developed into a condo development/ holiday resort and nothing has happened since.

It's still there but you can't get to see it.

    Spursman,

I know what you are saying about driving, but in my opinion you miss out on a guide who can tell you interesting things about the local area, history etc etc...

Each to their own of course, but we prefer having a guide.

I think we would enjoy an organised trip as we will be doing lots of driving throughout our holiday. VC sounds great. Did anyone else suffer altitude sickness , should we be prepared for this? Also how did you book the tour(NW Man)? Did you wait until you were in the resort? As it will be summer should I be concerned that they will all be full?

Altitude sickness ? Its news to me.

We booked our tour in the hotel, stayed at El Dorado.

As for availability, cant help you there, we went in January.

Apparently it's quite common. When we went for lunch when we got there I couldn't eat because I felt sick and the waitress told me a lot of visitors get it when they go there. I got it just as we were driving from the airport to my aunt's sisters house who lives there somewhere.
