Working Tax Credits/Pension Credit

Husband was made redundant 3 months ago when firm went bust. He received statutory Redundancy payment of just over £7000. He has been claiming JSA contribution based since May. (we do have savings of about £30000). He is 60 years old at the beginning of September. His JSA finishes in November. Have looked at the various calculators and it seems he should get about £136.00 in Pension Credits
He is going for an interview at our local supermarket tomorrow, which would be 16hrs a week at minimum wage say approx £80 pw.I presume he wont [pay any tax or NI, (his NI forecast is full pension at 65) but would he get WTC and if so how much ( have tried some of calculators but with him being so near 60 its awkward).
What I am really asking is whats his best option ? P/T job or Pension Credits.

Ypou would need to be working over 30hrs (or he works 16 and you work 14) to get WTC, he cant qualify through the over 50 element as he hasnt been on the relevant benefits for 6 month.
Best bet is to claim pension credit, and work - he can do that - what is your icnome ??I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
I dont work, so have no income.. So would he be able to do these 16hrs earning about £80 and claim Pension credits as well ?0

If your combined income is less than £126.05*, he will be able to claim pension credit. Whether you work or not does not matter with Pension Credit, its your income thats the determining factor.
I also think that £10 of the weekly wages will be ignored when determining your income.
*Pension Credit for a couple is £174.05, but as you have £30,000 in savings this is reduced by £1 for every £500 of savings above £6,000, i.e. (30000-6000)/500 = £480 -
Thanks so much for that info. Have had a look at the Pension Info site and found the calculator. I've put our figures in in various scenarios and it looks promising. Did not realise that you could work and claim Pension Credits. Thought it was one or the other. So, will definately be making a claim on his birthday, whether hubby gets the job or not seems we should get something.0
