  • Hiya, social work courses are eligible for an NHS bursary - google GSCC and go to the become a social worker section - this has all the bursary info.
I think £3000 is available to everyone with a further £3000 that is means tested. They cover tuition fees and I'm pretty sure there is a dependants allowance too.
Worth checking with your Local Authority too as some will sponsor social work students.

I'm afraid you're wrong; fees are payable for Social Work degrees. You can use the bursary to pay the fees if you wish but you don't have to do so.

A good starting point for financial information is

    http://www.socialworkcareers.co.uk/start/degree.asp

    as well as

I receive the bursary and get tution fees paid for - on the MA course.

Thanks for the info Olderbutwiser - I wonder why MA is paid for but not BA?

Agree with Boggins, definately look into schemes you local authority offer. Not only can these assist with finances but they can give experience at unqualified level beforehand.

Presumably because there is adequate funding in place for undergraduate degrees through the student loans system, which isn't the case for postgraduate degrees.

My fault for not being clear - I am due to start the MA so that is what I knew of the bursary. I've since found out that undergrad students pay the fees out of their bursary or student finance.

OP You would receive the Social work busary (£4500 outside london) as well as the full package of student finance and sometimes additional busaries from the Uni.

Good luck-am waiting to hear about my SW application at the mo.
