The Warning turns into a Headache!
Hi,
As a consequence of an accident last week... (see A warning to drivers thread). Basically, me going into the back of a driver who'd made an emergency stop on a quiet road, for no apperent reason....
I have since agreed between myself and the other driver that neither of us would be making a claim.. (stupidly?).
This morning I took my car to the garage with what I thought was just crack in the raditator has turned into the whole the front of my car being shunted back. Basically, a new front is needed. About £1700.
My car is a Dec 1999 Mercedes A class, It's prob worth £1500+, the garage say it's basically a write off
My dilemna now is...
1; Do I go through on the insurance anyway... get what I can for it being a write off, loose 2 years no claim and have my new premium go up next year.
2; Forget claiming and sell the car for scrap, a rough guess would be for about £300-400?
3; This was my number one choice- go for the scrappage scheme and get a Polo or a Ibiza for about £7000. Though I have just read the small print and my car seems to be 4 months too young to qualify!!!!!!!!!!!
What do I do?

That gum you like is coming back in style.0

other than the radiator does it really need repairing?0

Just get it repaired to a state that makes it legally roadworthy.
As you ran in to the back of him, it sounds suspicious to me, in that the other driver probably wasn't insured. If it was an insurance scam, he would have been wanting you to pay him cash there and then, or he'll claim with a few friends being a witness along with a whiplash claim. And even if he was insured, I'd want to swap details anyway as damage can sometimes go unseen... Hmmmm.0 -
Apparently,
The radiator is the least of my worries.... the impact on it didn't come from infront of the car (colliding with the other driver), but from the 'insides' of my car shunted forwards... headlights, bumper, front panels, etc. They quaoted me £1000 for parts, though I know they'll be getting them direct from Mercedes (surely, I could buy them cheaper myself online), but is it worth it? Let alone that the MOT cost £400 2 weeks ago.0 -
The other driver at first was flipping out about the damage on his car and the pain in his back. He calmed down when he saw I had a baby in the back of my car. He claimed that he went to his mechanic and there was no charge for whatever it was that needed to be fixed. He then called me the following day to say his back was feeling much better and he reckoned there was two ways of proceeding..... we get in touch with our insurance companies and let them know what happened without claiming or that we write an agreement between ourselves that there was no need for a claim for either of us. I went for the latter, thinking I had a £100 radiator job!!!!0

Are the bumper/panels etc hanging off? The headlights not being aligned properly would be an MOT failure, not sure about damaged bumpers/wings but assuming they aren't dragging on the floor I can't see why it would be. I'm guessing visually the damage isn't too bad if you thought it to be a £100 radiator job.0

No, nothing's hanging off. Just a crack down the centre of the grill. It drove fine to the garage this morning, though only a mile away. would the garage suggest calling it a write off if it could be roadworthy for less?0

So, did you ever get the agreement in writing or was it just verbally agreed?0
-
I've got it in writing.0

Just scrap it IMO - sounds like it's quite extensively damaged.0
