I wonder if anyone knows the answer to my question? I am considering taking a career break from work for up to one year in order to look after my children (I work in local government) .
I have recently become a single parent, through no fault of my own (getting away from an abusive partner). :j
I was wondering am I able to claim benefit ie housing/council tax benefit, income support, tax credits etcduring this time as it is unpaid.
Any help received would be greatly appreciated.

How old are your children? Parents with children over 12 are expected to be working or jobseekers & are not able to claim income support under the new rules.
You should get HB & single persons discount CT though. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
child tax credits you should get
council tax and housing benefit they'd look at how much you had coming in, but would imagine you'd get some help
income support - doubt it because you have a contract of employment still0 -

My youngest is 8. I am only looking for this to last for a year at the most. I was hoping that I could claim comething as whilst on a career break, you don't get paid from your employer!0 -
Yes, you can claim Income Support, Child Tax Credit, Housing/Council Tax benefit. People on career breaks are treated no differently.0

That is good news...however I think there might be a delay in receiving payment, as I would be voluntarily leaving paid employment (even though not permanent arrangement).0 -

There would not be a problem because you would be claiming IS as a single parent rather than JSA.0 -
Yes - you can claim IS. It's a common misconception that you cannot. So long as you are a lone parent and your youngest child is under 10, and your career break is unpaid you can claim (the age of youngest child drops down to age 10 in October)0

As for the Career break - it depends how your employer treats a career break but often its no problem.0
