Support with Mortgage Interest

Options
I was made redundant in January and I have been on Job seekers allowance since. I made an application for support with mortgage interest after 13wks and I was told i could not get it since I was on Contributions based Job Seekers and not Income based.

However, the citizens advice bureau are telling me that i should be entitled to it as I do not have savings of more than 16k. (in fact i have no savings at all).

The DWP have told me i only qualify after 6 months! (this is when my Job seekers becomes income based)

could someone advise me if they are getting this and how they got it.

I am so confused and desparate as I am now in serious arrears on my mortgage.

Many thanks in advance

In that case, in the absence of any other income or capital, you should qualify for SMI. You should have been asked to complete an application for income based JSA in order to be assessed for SMI. Give them a call tomorrow, hopefully you will get someone that understands the process.

they did give me a form to fill in, which I did (JSA3) and even after that they STILL said I am on contributions based job seekers. They told me that it was worked out according to my NI contributions over the last 2 or 3 years and it had nothing to do with how much or how little money I had in my savings.

That is true, but I believe you need to claim for income support if you do not have enough to live on. This is when your savings are taken in to account. As part of your income support, you should be able to fill in a form to get help with your mortgage interest payment.

Suzie is correct as morgage interest support is paid for via income support. You need only have an entitlement for 10p of income support to qualify for help with interest payments.

Make an appointment with the job centre to apply for IS. Once you are eligible, you'll be sent an M12 form to send to your lender & they return this direct to DWP & payments will commence after your qualifying period is up.

If you do qualify & have been given the wrong info by DWP/Jobcentre then you can ask that it be backdated due to official error.

Have you let your lender know why you are in arrrears & come to some arrangement about a mortgage payment holiday or similar untill you qualify for help? If not then do speak to them & keep them informed.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • You can claim SMI if you are claiming IBJSA and IBESA, you do not have just to be claiming IS to be entitled to it.

To the op, you should get the SMI when you are tranferred to IBJSA as dmg as already stated.
  • I phoned them and they said that I do not qualify for Income support.. the only thing I qualify for is JSA.

Now they say that when I start getting IBJSA, I have to wait another 13wks before I qualify for SIM!!!

That means I will have waited for SIM for 10 months in total!

I just do not understand - this all seems so unfair to me. I will have lost my home by then... the bank had allowed me to make reduced payments until this kicks in, which I have been doing through an over draft facility which is also nearly finished, as its what i have been living off.

I have written to the DWP, and they have not replied to any of my letters or complaints. Today they said a manager would call me, but no one has.
  • Op, go to your local CAB who can help you further with negotiating with your mortgage lender.

You maybe classed as having an underlying entitlement to help with housing costs due to being on CBJSA. This does not mean that you will get any IS but the housing costs are paid via IS. If you were deemed to have an underlying entitlement to Help with housing you would be award a 10p rate of IS, the only way they can pay hosuing if your not entitled to IS is to actually ward you the 10p rate of IS. The mortgage money would go st right to your mortage provider.

I would call JCP and check the underlying entitlemnt, use that phrase.
Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!
