solicitors argueing

HI,

This is my first post but i've been reading this site for ages taking in all the hints and tips.

We are FTB's. We are buying a house and everything seemed to be going without a hitch and i presumed we were not far off exchanging. My oh had a phone call form our solicitors this afternoon saying that they had been argueing with the sellers solicitors other an extension. We put down on the solicitors forms that we thought there was an extension as it looked like the kitchen and bathroom were added at a later date (mainly due to the entrance to the bathroom being a little out of place on the stairs and the steps going down into the kitchen). The sellers solicitors say there isn't an extension. Im no building expert and am not fussed if it's an extension or not. Whats annoyed me is the sellers solicitors gave mine 18 days to sort it out or they will put the house up for sale again. From what my oh gathered the 18 days is nearly up and all the solicitors have been doing is sending each other threatening emails and faxes. Today is the first we have heard of it and im going to get on the phone first thing in the morning to find out what the hells been going on and why didn't they contact me when the problem arose 18 days ago instead of squabbling amongst themselves.

Sorry for the long email but what i really want to know is am i going to get charged by the solicitors for sending each other letters, faxes etc arqueing. and why do the solicitors say they are going to put the house back up for sale if it's not sorted. Surely thats nothing to do with the solicitors.

    If you have agreed a fixed price for your legal work, it should not change because of this. Argueing over little details is par for the course with conveyancing work.

    no its the seller making that choice and informing there solicitor to tell you,also when you took on your solicitor you would have a had a breakdown in costs, all letters flying about should be in that break down , if concerned ask him,

    Thanks for that. I saw the lady we are buying the house off over the weekend as we went to take some measurements. She didn't mention anything and thought everything should be finalised soon as we did. So i pressume it's just the solicitors trying it on. Just looked through my solicitors contract, thanks for putting my mind at rest. I still don't know what all the fuss is about and why they just didn't ask me when the problem arose. Im going to go around tomorrow morning and have a look at the outside. Apart from looking at the brick work and the roof slates what other things should i look for to see if it's original or an old extension?

    things to look for:

    how old is the house?

    is it a terrace, or similar to others in the street - compare the appearance outside with them?

    we had a Victorian terrace. although it was not extended, there was a step down into the kitchen and the bathroom (ex back bedroom) was off a half landing. all the houses in the street were built like that.
