I've used Freeindex for a while and had some small amounts of business through it. I know others who have had more.

If you've been contacted by somebody trying to sell you a bigger advert dacouch, you've been targetted by a spammer. See this email received from Freeindex in Sept 08

Hi Everyone

We have had reports that a few members of the directory have received phone calls supposedly from FreeIndex staff – requesting either money, contact details or company information for other websites.

I’d like to take this opportunity to confirm that we will NEVER call to ask for money. FreeIndex is a completely free service. So however convincing a ‘FreeIndex’ salesperson may sound – they are not legitimate. The best thing you can do is get as much information from them about who they are and how you can get hold of them and forward it to us, so we can try and stop them from abusing your privacy and our good reputation.

We have absolutely no need for a telesales team, as we don’t sell anything. The only reason we might ever call you is for a general chat, to ask your opinion about a new website feature, or to chat about marketing opportunities and ways to get some shared publicity in the press. This is rare though and will never involve a credit card!

great, and as slinky said freeindex send you an email saying we wont pester you. there are others heres a list of what i use for taxi advertising, not all work for all trades.
how i found them was to google, my trade / my town / my county. then look at the host of the page rather than the business it purports to , hence taxi brandon suffolk would return http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&rlz=1T4GGLL_en-GBGB304GB304&q=taxi+brandon+suffolk&start=0&sa=N
