Paintshop Pro X2 won't recognise RAW pictures

Hope I've put this in the right section.

My pressie this Christmas was a new DSLR camera, Canon 450d. It takes super piccies, but I cannot get either Paintshop Pro X2 or Photoshop CS to recognise any shots taken in RAW format. I have ticked all the right boxes in the preference menus but still no joy. The only way I can get to edit them is by opening them up in the Canon software and then I can send them to Photoshop in TIFF format, but this is very long winded, and I prefer to use Paintshop Pro for speedier editing.

I can't find anywhere for patches to download for either (maybe not looking in the right place).

Anyone any suggestions to help? Please? A virtual bottle of cheer to anyone who can help!

Jack, that link is for Adobe Photoshop, not Corel Paintshop. Chewbumpkin, try clicking on Help/Check for Updates to see if you need to download a patch for Raw capability.

The Corel site isn't clear about what file formats are supported. The new Paintshop Pro X2 Ultimate Edition boasts enhanced Raw support, but I think the standard version should support the main manufacturer raw formats.

Thanks Fifer - have already done that - no updates available.

Jackvisual - I'll try your link. At least if I can get Photoshop to accept RAW, it will be better than nothing.

Have a  for me. Many thanks to both of you for your suggestions.

can't you just use the supplied canon software to handle raw files until you find a solution? (its digital photo professional i think)
  • Update: have now installed the RAW plug in for Photoshop CS, and it won't recognise the files.

Yes I can, but the Canon software is very basic compared to my other two programmes. The best I can do is open in the Canon, and save as TIFF file and then I can definitely open in Photoshop and may even be lucky enough to open them in Paintshop. Fingers crossed. Still going all round the houses though.

    Thanks for thought though.

Although probably no quicker than your curent workaround, you can download the Adobe DNG converter:

    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4214

convert your RAW files to DNG and then use CS.

  • Thanks Charlie, have downloaded and installed this and will report back as to whether it works.

It seems the only way I will be able to get Paintshop to work will be to pay for an upgrade to X2 Ultimate. It clearly states on the description that it supports my new camera.:( Apparently the cost of buying a new camera is that you have to also buy new software to see the photos grrrr.

paintshop pro X2 does not suport raw files only the ultimate edition does. as for Photoshop CS, have u downloaded the camera raw plugin from adobe, it is free, but may require some finding as CS is getting old now.
Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j

I fear I will have to splash out on the Paintshop Pro Ultimate, but will wait a little while to see if the pound picks up a little more against the dollar. The downloadable update is the same price in dollars as it is in pounds, so it makes sense to wait a little. Or I might wait until the spring when I go to the States and see if I can get a boxed version (you never know, PSP Pro X3 might be out by then).

I did find and downloaded the plugin for Photoshop, but it doesn't work. Camera is probably too new a model. I can't afford to buy CS4, so will just have to process the photos via the Canon software until I can get PSP Ultimate.

Many thanks to you all.
