Help with student finance please, BLOCKED payments!

Options
i'm not getting anywhere by ringing them up so thought i'd ask for advice here!

I started my midwifery degree on 1st september, i still haven't had my 1st payment for my student loan even though i applied months ago. It says online that my payments are 'blocked', they have said this is because they are STILL waiting for DWP to confirm my national insurance number! It has taken two weeks so far and i'm still no further to having my loan. Everytime i ring student finance they say the same thing 'they can't do nothing until DWP gets back in touch with them' grrrrrr Why can't they just accept a photocopy of my NI card from me?! How long will it take the useless idiots at DWP to do their job?!

    Re-read.

Ok months ago? Why did you not phone them sooner? Mine was sorted in 2 weeks.

When do you start? Do you have a student overdraft?

my payments didn't become blocked until last week, when i started my course, before that it said approved, i'm not psychic and did not know it was going to change to blocked.

no overdraft and i started on 1st sept like my op said.

can you get in touch with the dwp yourself? They may have an online email somewhere on their site. Or go into the students finance help/student support at uni and plead poverty they may be able to arrange a hardship grant if you atarted uni ten days ago without any finane. Worth a try.
Keep ringing/emailing student loans until they do something. Good luck

    Oh yeh missed that.

You could go into town, open a student account and use the overdraft for now, then pay it back later.

Um you could try ringing DWP and tell them that you need money at the moment?

You could also ask the uni for hardship fund and say that they are messing you about and you need some money to live at the moment and waiting for student loan.

    - Also they can't accept the photocopy of NI because obviously it could be fake/someone elses etc.

NI numbers are primarily dealt with and issued by HMRC - generally DWP don't issue or administer NINO's.

I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Actually, DWP DO issue NINO's for those that come from abroad and don't have one, UK nationals who don't have one or need to be upgraded, people applying for student loans that don't have one or need one upgraded or basically anyone who has a need for a NINO that doesn't have one!

They apply to DWP, who make an appointment at a job centre for the customer to complete a form and to prove identity and right to work, then the form is sent to another department within DWP to allocate the NINO and send a letter with the NINO on, then the form is sent to HMRC who register the NINO account and send out the NINO card...

I know this cos' i work for NINO allocations in DWP!:D

If the OP has a NINO card as they stated then they should contact HMRC as the account will be with them.

I think this took a long time when i did mine too, they said something about it going and coming back in batches.

Its nice when you get to next year, you just tick that everything is the same and it comes through again though, so theres something to look forward to!
