Time between leaving school & starting Uni

Options
I am getting Child Benefit, Child & Working Tax credits which stop in August. My son is yr 13 and will leave after A lvl exams in the next 2 weeks. He will hopefully go to Uni in Sept. Can I or he claim anything for his upkeep in this time? I work 31 hrs he works on a 0 hr contract as and when required (no more than 20 hrs a mth) Please advise as my wages aren't enough to support us both.

You won't be able to claim anything once the benefits stop for your son. If he's going to uni he won't be able to claim anything either. His only option would be to find a job and pay his way, sorry.

It is possible that you might be entitled to some benefits in your own right when your son goes to university - depends on your personal circumstances.

Try putting your details into the benefits calculator on https://www.entitledto.co.uk as if your son was a full time student. = to see if you might be eligible.

Or give us some details of your salary/rent/ mortgage/partner/other children and we might be able to make some suggestions.

You son will get a student loan and will be able to work part time when at uni so you should (hopefully) be just looking after yourself (if you are a single mum with just the one child.)

Perhaps it might be a case of readjusting your income and expenditure/dealing with debts/upping your income.

Not judging, just trying to help!

Will there be much of a shortfall?

Your son will likely be able to find work in his 3 months off, first place to try the place he works 20 hours a month. That would make it easier to find a job when at uni too.

Cant he ask his job to up his hours seeing as he'll be free full time until he starts uni or find another job that isn't a zero hours contract?

Your CB won't stop until 31st August. He'll start Uni sometime in September. Not sure when his student loan comes through but you should be able to make plans now to account for a shortfall for 2-3 weeks.

He should remain disregarded for council tax purposes across the summer, even if child benefit isn't being paid . ( He would be disregarded whilst child benefit is being paid anyway though).

I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Any students in year 13 will continue to be eligible for CB and CTC until 31 August, regardless of their DOB.

Your son will then receive his student loan money as soon as he has enrolled on his university course.
