Average cost of complete bathroom renovation?

I got a quote from one of the national DIY chains for a complete renovation of a small (2m x 2m) bathroom. The cost of labour was £5,000 - I know these chains are more expensive than using an independent fitter, but I wanted to find out how much of a difference there is?



The work to be done is:

  • new suite inc. replace bath with shower enclosure
  • replace taps & shower
  • remove existing tiling/carpet and tile & floor whole room
  • replace radiator
  • install extractor fan which we don't currently have
  • some pipe work to move the shower & sink
Was also recommended to install a shower pump which we can do without, and the quote also includes the cost of an electrical certificate. Given the above, does £5k sound like a reasonable price?


I'm also confused about how an independent fitter would work - could one competent person do all of the above, or do separate people usually do the plumbing/tiling/electrical work etc?

    I would advise against using the big chains as they will subcontract to a fitter, taking a cut themselves.

    When we had our bathrooms done there were several trades alongside the bathroom fitter (electrician and tiler). You may find a Jack-of-All-Trades who will claim to do everything, but from (limited) experience you are better off getting specialists in if you want the best finish. Our bathroom fitter brought in his own guys so we only had to to deal with him and he coordinated everything and we are really pleased with the result.

    Any electrical work done in a bathroom must be done by a competent person and be accompanied by the appropriate paperwork. Your Jack-of-All-Trades is highly unlikely to be qualified and able to certify any electrical work.

    Paid £1700 to a bathroom fitter, included ripping out and new install including some adjustment to pipework, roughly 2x2.3 bathroom. Not including electricial work which the electrician did and the plasterer plastered the ceiling. I also paid £50 for a silicone specialist to silicone every corner when complete.
