Buying travel insurance for someone who lives abroad?

Options
I've bought tickets for a friend's family to fly from South Africa to the UK. I want to buy them travel insurance for their protection and to refund me in case of unforeseen cancellation.

Can I buy insurance for someone else? Is it best to use a UK or South African company?

thanks

Difficult one... for a start, do they have the appropriate visas? (Travel insurance does not cover visa problems.) Anyway, UK-based insurers would not touch them: there are two insurance companies that cover people based anywhere in the world, but I think that they would have to take out their own insurance and am sure that they, not you, would have to make a claim.

Send them the money and let them buy it themselves from a South African country, given I assume they are not a UK resident or UK citizen.
