The spring break last from February until the first week in april. During this time if you are wanting to take a holiday on the caribbean coast you will be well advised to avoid the cancun area unless you are a party animal. I went to the Riviera Mayo area and stayed at the H10 Ocean Maya Royale hotel. This hotel is an adult only hotel which is always one of my priority, The area is very quiet and fine if you an enjoy a hotel base holiday but is not ideal if you want to get out and about. Not many shops or bars are nearby. The other downside about Riviera Mayo is that it is a 90 minute transfer from the airport. Playacar is slightly longer..March and April are probably the best months of the year for the weather and both are well outside the hurricane season.

Weather wise March, April or early May are probably the best months all round. Cancun is the party capital on the Caribbean coast resorts in Mexico. It can get especially rowdy during the North American Spring break period. Also crime is generally higher here. Riviera Mayo is very quiet and pretty and a bit isolated.(Mainly large All inclusive hotels) If you want to get out, even to do some shopping you will usually need to get a Taxi which will add to the expense of your holiday. Playcar is slightly better in ths respect. Maybe Playa Del Carmen is a mixture of both and is the best option. I suggest for currency you take a mixture of American Dollars and Mexican Pesos, which is far more practical for any smaller purchases. Don't forget to save some cash for your exit payment at Cancun airport on your return. also bear in mind the transfer time from the airport to your resort some can be up to 2 hours.

Thank you everyone who has posted on this subject. Your feedback has been most helpful. After additional research we have now booked a holiday at the end of March at the H10 Ocean Maya Royale in the resort of Riviiero Maya It ticks almost all of the right boxes for us, including being an adult only hotel and being on beach location It is also not as big as some of the hotels in the area. The main downside we can see Is that to get anywhere including shops it will involve taking a taxi. We also understand the majority of guests will be American or Canadian. Wen we return in April we will submit a post on how we got on.

Is Riviera Maya an area or resort. Are there any shops or bars or is there only hotels. Is there any local buses to take you to Playa Del Carmen or Tulum.

It's the name given to the Caribbean coast of Mexico from Cancun southwards for almost 200km, so it's a pretty big area.

There are fairly frequent buses running between Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum (bear in mind that the town of Tulum is slightly inland and not very interesting - the interesting parts are on the coast), and other places. There are plenty of other things to visit in the area such as Chichen Itza and other Mayan ruins, and cenotes (sinkholes you can swim in). If you plan to move around a lot it's worth considering car hire - the driving is pretty easy.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

Do any local buses run near the H10 Ocean Maya Royale or how much would taxis cost. To the nearest shops which we believe are in Playa Del Carmen. We do not feel comfortable about hiring a car in Mexico. Any feedback on this subject will be most helpful to us. Thank you.
