Making A Fabric Headboard

Hi, I've decided to make a pretty simple replacement headboard for my bed, it's a custom size bed so an off the shelf headboard doesn't quite work.
My plan is pretty simple, cover a board with foam, wadding and then fabric. My question is this... what kind of board should I buy for this?
MDF, OSB or plywood?
Any recommendations on the board thickness? I've seen a few plans online but many don't make a recommendation for this. I was thinking 12mm? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I picked up a second hand headboard from freecycle and another from a charity shop because they then came with all the fittings (legs/bolts) which was the bit I would have found complicated.
One was a straight rectangle which I cut down to fit a queen size bed.
I stripped them down to the wood (MDF?)
I think by rights you should cover the foam with a fire-retardant lining (a must for a rental) but I didn't - your choiceLove living in a village in the country side0 -
I made my own.
I used two pieces of MDF, 2 pieces of foam & 2 pieces of cloth.
The bed is super king, so each panel is 3 foot wide, by 4 foot tall.
I mounted it flat against the wall from the top of the mattress.
It’s only about 6 inches from the ceiling. I love it!0 -
