How much should I pay for a carshare?

Options
I need to travel from Darlington (near Middlesbrough/Sunderland/Newcastle) to Bracknell (near to Reading/Slough). This is 260 miles according to Google Maps.

The lift is through a carshare/liftshare website so it isn't someone I know and is a one-off lift rather than a regular occurrence.

The car is a HONDA CIVIC 2013

How much do you think would be fair for both parties in terms of price?

Take whatever the HMRC mileage rate is, multiply it by 260, and then halve it.

Who's driving? Whoever that is will be getting the harder end of the stick, so I think 60/40

I'm assuming the other person owns the car so that needs to be considered too.

So if OP's not driving and the driver owns the car then I'd expect to pay the larger percentage.

The owner of course is going there anyway, a contribution is a bonus :-)
You need to be correctly insured to drive for hire or reward...

OP says it's through a website. I'd want to check the Ts&Cs to find out what insurance was in place. If it's a genuine business then they should have it sorted. If not then I'd take a train. 😁

Ok based on the replies, I was going to offer £35. Does that seem reasonable do you think?

    Other person owns the car.

At work we’d get back 40p a mile for taking folk out. I’m guessing 260 Miles is one way, so 520 Miles x 20p a mile so I think £104 is fair to be honest.

The carshare websites usually tell you how much is reasonable

My car insurance policy allows payment of reasonable costs for ride sharing without it being classed as "hire or reward".

My best guest is fuel only will cost 15p per miles. That is excluding tear and wear of the car...
