I would feel more confident if the feedback system meant anything.

I left a neutral the other day for something, something I rarely do but the item had a possible safety issue and the sellers chosen courier was lousy causing me a lot of hassle.
Comment was polite and not too scathing.

But its a top rated seller so it was soon erased, !!!!!!! as if it never existed.

Looking at the very few that made it through against the seller over the year, it seems your only chance is something like 'Don't like the chair, its feels really uncomfortable' which would be hard to contest I suppose, no doubt the seller would still try and claim 500 people didn't complain so it must be comfortable.

    Couldn't agree more.
Feedback is meant to reflect a buyer's experience of a transaction, so if it isn't breaking any ebay rules, they should either let it stay or be done with it, or just scrap the feedback system altogether. As there's no point in checking a top rated or power seller's feedback before purchasing as the negs have likely as not been removed to help boost ebay's coffers, the whole system has become a farce and not worth the 'paper' it's not written on.

I'm sure a lot of sellers now are wondering where the eBay you use is? The eBay rules on feedback removal have become very stringent now with CS not being able to remove anything, even when it is blatantly against the rules, everything goes through to a specialist team where it is decided whether it breaks one of the few rules or not.

The same ebay everyone else uses, presumably.
All I know is thst 2 factual, non personal negs I left in the recent past, neither of which which broke any ebay rules were immediately removed (heavy item of furniture wrongly addressed by seller which we had to hire a van & travel some distance to collect as they refused to either sort it out or make any kind of goodwill gesture) and another where a breakable item was so poorly packaged that it arrived in smithereens.
I've been doing ebay since the beginning and know how the fb system works. I'm not the only one this is happening to.

Maybe as an explanation? if an INR claim was opened but then closed in the sellers favour due to the tracking showing as delivered any feedback left is removed automatically.

Yes I'm sure that's correct for such a scenario, but there was never a INR claim or a case, as I did actually receive the item in the end (although it had been delivered to a totally different address which was the 'power' seller's fault - for which he then tried to blame the courier.)
I'd corresponded with the seller via ebay messaging throughout, then when he refused to either admit to his error or recompense us for our costs and inconvenience, I left a factual negative completely within ebay's guidelines - which was promptly removed and the hitherto 100% score remained intact.

I agree, In my case (I can't be totally sure of wording as it was gone so soon!) but I left a neutral for a mattress with

"Fire safety label on packaging not actual mattress, sellers courier choice poor"

First is purely factual and a concern as the fire retardant safety label was stuck to the plastic sheeting it came in and not sewn to the mattress as is usual now, as far as can tell, this is not a requirement but may be a point of concern for a fellow buyer, the point of feedback?

The second point was fair comment, I requested the sellers courier via their website (in good time) to leave the item with a neighbour if I was out, they ignored it and left a missed card. I called the holding depot direct and it was agreed to leave it with a neighbour again. Again the driver didn't do this. I phoned again and tried to arrange to intercept the driver who was still out, they couldn't as he turns his phone off all day! As the need was now desperate I had a 40 mile round trip in Friday rush hour to the depot to collect, fortunately I have a big vehicle but I only just managed to get it in. Having been shipped around so much the packaging was damaged and the item unpleasantly dirty in places.

Yes I could have raised complaint, possibly returned it but my need was high as the old bedding had gone, this one was now 2 days late and playing pass the parcel with a 40kg mattress is not fun, more time off work for couriers etc. So I cleaned it and kept it, all in all I think a neutral and my comment pretty light as 80 characters will allow.

And yet it was gone like a puff of smoke in a moment.

Perhaps an extra safeguard should be added so when a seller raises an objection to feedback and Ebay uphold it, it be returned to the buyer with the objection and the buyer given further opportunities to submit it with revision until the buyers no longer objects or Ebay deny their objection.

All I can say is that my business account has 100,000 feedback, top rated, powerseller and access to eBay concierge, it's real struggle to get unfair feedback removed.

Regarding your mattress it seems they are excluded from having the label actually fixed to the item:

    https://www.firesafe.org.uk/furniture-and-furnishings-fire-safety-regulations-19881989-and-1993/

A permanent label must be fitted to every item of new furniture (with the exception of mattresses
    and bed-bases)

A display label must be fitted to every item of new furniture at the point of sale (with the exception of mattresses, bed-bases, pillows, scatter cushions, seat pads, loose covers sold separately from the furniture and stretch covers)

Either your seller was one of the official eBay outlets (and would likely have an account manager) or they got lucky with the overseas CS team.

    Thank you, informative post.

I think the seller 'got lucky' they are actually just an ordinary small business seller with 3600 feedback and offering "eBay Premium Service" so not a special seller like you after all.

Look out for other reasons sellers get feedback "easily" removed. You buy 6 items off a seller and contact them about item A and have a discussion about item A, and then leave bad feedback for item D saying "seller didn't respond", then it is factually incorrect as you never contacted them about item D. We have had a lot of feedback removed quite easily, that is factually incorrect in this manner.

A lot of folks have switched to FB marketplace, Gumtree or Shpock.
Ebay is becoming a nightmare with their reluctance to cut down on the sellers who have multiple listings of the same item (totally against the rules).

Amazon sellers have also noticed a drop in sales of CDs, DVDs and Blu-Rays as Amazon hammers the sellers as Amazon pushes it's Prime video services. This, in turn, has lead to a drop in sales of other stuff as buyers not being able to find a DVD or CD due to the sellers pulling their stock, looking elsewhere.

They have been moaning about it on Amazon sellercentral's threads.
