In his article about share trades up to £1,000 here:
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1045437844,40736,
Martin suggests https://www.share.com
They charge a minimum of £2.50Thanks to all who post constructively.

The Share Centre charges 1%, minimum £2.50. There is also a £2.50 + VAT ( £2.94 ) quarterly admin fee. Contrary to what the article says ( sorry, Martin ), they will charge this fee regardless of whether you receive dividends. So it's only cheaper if you're buying less than £450's worth of shares. In any case, if you are willing to go for batch dealing then the Halifax Sharebuilder cannot be beaten at £1.50 per deal -

Hi, costcutter,
The free trades only apply until 31/12/04; after that it's £12 ( or £7.50 if you trade more than 11 times per quarter ). There is also an inactivity charge of £9 + VAT per quarter if you don't trade, so it's not as cheap as it seems...

Thanks for the reply, so what is the cleapest way of making a one off shares purchase?
Anyone know of a cheap deal where the shares arent pooled? where my name goes on the certs?
Thanks0 -
Hi, costcutter,
It all depends on how frequently you want to deal. If it's only going to be once or twice a year then Hargreaves Lansdown is one of the least expensive ( bearing in mind that certificated dealing costs a fair bit more than having a nominee account ). They charge 1% for up to £10,000 and 0.5% for the next £10,000, with a minimum charge of £15. The Classic sharedealing account costs nothing to run.
There is a sort of halfway house in sponsored Crest accounts which are uncertificated but the shares are in your name. Here's some more info -

I have had no experience with sponsored Crest accounts.
