If you are going to do such a thing as this, then you shouldn't arbitrarily pick your numbers - disposable income is "after housing costs", else it gets queered by people living luxuriously and bemoaning poverty.
Maybe "after work travel costs" would be relevant, but not food etc.
Two people might have £500/month at this point.
If one spends: £150 on heating/water and £200 on food they have £150 remaining.
If another spends £60 on heating/water and £100 on food they have £340 remaining.
Both have the same money, at £500 ... but the one with £150 remaining will be "moaning" that the other's so much better off....
Exactly - but you also get to choose your housing - my essential housing costs are low because of years of throwing money at the mortgage. If I had made different choices in the past (or upsized) I would have far less freedom now.But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Not everyone has the same opportunities / gets chose their housing - Especially over the last few years, there are a huge amount who are forced into over-priced private rental and other situations that aren't really a choice, more of what they can get IYSWIMThe opposite of what you know...is also true0 -

Certainly not everyone has choice, but I believe many people do, though some of the choices they may see as so much of a no brainer that they forget about them. Not bad choices, they may be very good choices for non-financial reasons, but they are there. Choosing to rent a flat rather than a room, choosing to spend more on living costs and the now rather than saving for the future, choosing what part of the country to live in.But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

£150 for me, and the same for the Mrs. I often wish it was more, but then I realise it will still only get spent 0

We have savings and investments that we could "raid" if we wanted too, and spend it all on pretty much anything...but we don't, we continue to save. I can count on one hand the number of take-away coffees I've ever bought!!
Our monthly outgoings are approx £1025 pm and I bring in £870pm (part-time), so in effect we are losing money...but we're not, due to interest/investment growth. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.31% of current retirement "pot" (as at end March 2024)0 -

Well I spend as much as I have left over after paying my bills, and frittering some on gambling and alcohol and then hit the tables at the weekend ..
Some people class socialising as a necessity , likewise holidays and shopping sprees, hair dos , nails, makeup
What some people class as part of their necessities others say is frivolity .. not really interested in what people spend or what on TBH ..horses for courses and personally I don't really think about what others do
Now if you put it as a percentage after essentials such as bills, utilities and food then that is slightly different as it can be equated to an income outgoing ratio , but then it gets complicated... all I know is I don't owe anyone a dime0
