Tried to pull off with handbrake on!

Options
Hi all,

I pulled out the drive with the handbrake on, I got to the end of my road (about 30 metres) when I realised and took it off.

Just worried I’ve done some serious damage :(

You have probably actually improved the brake by wearing them a tiny amount. You will not have damaged anything.

Very unlikely. You've made it wear a bit quicker, but 30m isn't going to hurt it. 30 miles, yes.

That's going to become more common with electronic handbrakes where you are expected to do that!

Put it this way, 30 metres is far less than the theoretical stopping distance at 40mph. If you can drive, the brake pressure is far less on the brake pads than stopping from 40mph.

Do you worry about the damage applying your brakes at 40mph might do?

Not really. With electronic handbrakes the brake is usually released automatically when driving off.

If everything still works ok, but since you were able to travel that distance with the handbrake on, perhaps they need attention anyway?

I guess it depends if you pull your handbrake firmly up.

That's what I mean. I drive more than one car.

My issue is that one has automatic hold that is set by a second press on the footbrake (an auto) and a manual handbrake and the other has no hold but an electronic handbrake. Both automatically release under power.

I then go on holiday and hire a car...

Considering it's not a troll post.....
    1) If the car was driving normally, then the handbrake may not be very effective and needs attention.
    2) Assuming the handbrake is effective and the car is FWD and the handbrakes operate the rear wheels, then the car may have been hopping and a little excess wear on the concerned tyres and possibly a strain on the clutch.

TBH whenever I've done that on a car, it has basically stalled, as for the new electronic handbrakes, seat belt on and the auto hold operates the handbrake as necessary.
