Are you on the Atkins? A friend of mine has been doing that ... gosh, it must be 18 mths or so now ... and has dropped several dress sizes, and although I told her she looked great a year ago she still continues with it

She eats tons of fish now, with salad or veggies, but has always stuck to mainly meat, fish, dairy and veggies - breakfast of eggs (from her own hens) and bacon, then lunch of cheese/ham type nibbles (if she eats it at all :naughty: ) and fish or meat with veggies/salad for dinner. I think a certain amount of carbs are allowed but she saves her allowance for vodka :rotfl:

She's tried so many times to talk me into it, because I need to lose some weight, but I'm not sure I could give up the rice and pasta. Bread and spuds I could probably live without, and I don't eat a lot of carbs anyway, but I do like my rice and pasta dishes

But going back to your post above, yes I believe some fruit/veg is quite high in carbs, mainly due to sugar content, so things like peas, sweetcorn, beans, bananas etc are limited in what you can eat. I'm just trying to remember back to my Weightwatcher days as certain stuff wasn't classed as "free foods" due to high carb content.

Can you have avocados? My favourite lunch is a sliced avocado with olives, sliced red and yellow peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes and whatever else is in the fridge. Top it all off with some lemon juice and black pepper and you're laughing.

Get the avos from the market though as supermarket ones are rip offs (except Morrisons, oddly...maybe they've started growing them in Yorkshire).

    Yes and yes

I have dropped a stone last year... but almost put it back on due to a lot of stress... I have a comfort food relationship when when I feel down I need some fatening foods to keep me happy... i know it is wrong but I am working on it and it is a lot better than drinking or smocking. I have had a car accident (no dmaage to me but lots to the car) a weekend job, an awful job situation where redundancy is showing its ugly head, an awful family situation and a moving out as well.

So now I am back onto it, I have planned my menus and I know how much it is going to cost and my firends nickname me Monica...;-) I am well organised and I am gona fight back on it all.

Atkins is wonderful BTW because you do not feel hungry. The only problme I have had was when I had a bad day and needed a carb helping. BF i supposed to help me with that now we are living together!

Hey CQ, you should think about the GI diet then, you can get loads of info online as it's much safer than the Atkins. Basically you avoid high GI (Glucose index) foods, like sugar, white bread, potatoes, beer, which break down into glucose quickly and give you a sugar rush. The problem with them is that you then get a sugar low (as your body goes to store the extra sugar) which makes you hungry again (and tired).

You can still eat brown bread, pasta al dente, all fruit and veg as long as they are not overcooked, brown rice...

(Sorry for the lesson but I did a degree in biochemistry and sometimes I can't help it)

Thanks Anna, this is something I've looked into and I actually bought the book by Rick Gallop, but alas it sits on my shelf untouched right now :o

I've also done biochem so know where you're coming from and have a better understanding of these "diets" than many, which is why I keep moaning to my friend about still following the Atkins after all this time! Unfortunately it's easy for her to ignore me as we live a few hundred miles apart LOL!

I don't think my weight problem is purely food/diet based though (I know they all say that but I have strong reason to believe otherwise) so until I can arrange to actually see my GP and get blood tests etc done I'm just left guessing. What complicates matters is the lack of exercise I get due to my current "lifestyle" so even by following a strictly healthy diet, which I do most of the time, it's still too much. I'm hoping things will change for the better once I move though :)

I did Atkins for a two years and lost 8 stones....here is what I took to work for lunches, I would prepare a few at a time and store them in the fridge.

Salads with tuna or salmon and mayo, I used to add herbs and spices as I fancied to vary the taste.
Steamed veggies and chicken or salmon or last nights dinner leftovers.
"sandwiches" made with rolled up lettuce leaves filled with ham/cheese or whatever you fancy.

As for Atkins not being safe, I always had fantastic blood work so go figure ;)
I only stopped doing it because I found it more difficult to fit in with going out socialising and would yo-yo diet in the end which I found frustrating and you cannot get away with it on Atkins!

Thx Jolinar... It is true it is hard to follow especially when you go out, event htough you said you did not want chips, thye put new potatoes or carrots on your plate... Well all the things your not supposed to have so you end up with the chicken salad but the chicken has breadcrumbs all over it!

I have found a couple of pubs in my area that do salads without any added crap in it so it is quite good. But it is true that I reach for sugar when i am stressed andmash and pasta and rice have a soothing effect when I am grumpy... I feel like a junkie sometimes.

But this time around I have decided I would stick to the plan for real, no goodies allowed, BF is supposed to prevent me from reaching for sugar when I am upset, and I will grow slowly back into maintenance and find out how many grams of carb a day I can have without putting anything back on! I know it works, so this time round it will be easier.

    ;-)

You could make a batch of low carb rolls and then take sandwich fixings like cheese or ham! I am partial to a couple of rolls with some tuna mayo.
