What was the reason for not getting in?Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0

Not sure but would imagine it’s over-subscription.0

It's a double edged sword.
I can see your argument but the other side of the coin is could it be that the other children would be in different classes (& hence different friends) so that your granddaughter would be in the same position anyway?0 -
Part of your appeal, have you looked to see if she is further (as the crow flies) than others in the village.
Our children go to a school where they were the only girls from their primary to go (eldest had a boy from the other primary class go). They are doing fantastically.0 -
If the school she has been allocated is the nearest available school with places and is over 3 miles from home, then the local authority have to provide transport to school. They may need reminding of this.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Hi Silvercar, can you point me in the right direction for finding out the legislation regarding the local authority having to provide transport to school? As far as we are aware there is a public bus service available (albeit the bus stop being a 30-minute walk away) and we assumed she would get a bus pass for that.0

Quick Google of free school transport and its the first return.

Most schools have an allocation criteria. Usually, looked after children, siblings, catchment of feeder, attends feeder, etc.
Which category does she fall in? As this is usually the best basis for your appeal, especially if you know the criteria under which other children at her school were allocated a place.
You also need to find out where she is on waiting list. Its 6m til they start school, people move, etc. If you are near top of the list you might still get a place anyway0 -
I think this is the first thing to do: if she's further away than anyone who has got in, then it is oversubscription. However I'm not sure there aren't times when 'as the crow flies' is the wrong way to measure: if there is no safe route except an unreasonably long one, then I think the 'safe' distance can be used.Part of your appeal, have you looked to see if she is further (as the crow flies) than others in the village.
But 'transport' may consist of a bus pass. That's certainly all that ours ever got.If the school she has been allocated is the nearest available school with places and is over 3 miles from home, then the local authority have to provide transport to school. Like many others of my generation I passed the 11 plus and went to what was then a Direct Grant school. As well as day boys from the 2 primary schools in the town, there were boarders from all over the country and boys from many outlying villages, rarely more than one from the same village.
Everyone soon made new friends as I'm sure your granndaughter would, should your appeal fail.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
