You really need to read the Newbies thread thoroughly and several times. It contains a very comprehensive guide to defending a court claim including answers to all the questions you are asking.
Yes it does take a fair bit of reading but you have a very, very winnable case. In order to win you do have to have a little understanding of what you are doing though.0 -

Faced with a decent defence they may well withdraw the case before it gets to court. You are now in a game of chicken.
The thing is you have a trump card. Naming the driver is a complete defence and they will know they are on a hiding to nothing. Why on earth would you want to pay them given they have no case against you?0 -
I am struggling financially at the moment so I could do without this headache, thats all.

Yes send them the amount claimed asap to stop them paying more for a hearing. You pay the claimant not the court0 -
