Before I fill out this SOA, could someone point me in which direction of how to fill in travel costs? Do I add up the amount of times dsd comes down in the year then divide the amount by 12?

Has he reassessed his maintenance payments if his income has reduced?
Have you checked if you are entitled to any tax credits etc with his reduced income?

It does sound like it is always going to be tough until OH can find a job nearer to where you are now living or work more hours. Have you both assessed if it still making financial sense for him to work at all at such a distance with the commuting and childcare costs? In the shorter term could he get unskilled work in the local area and actually be better off?

Def post up an SOA. Sometimes we get so bogged down and upset we can't see the wood for the trees. Often just the action of doing an SOA makes you feel better and more in control. If you feel brave post it up here and people may be able to help in areas you haven't thought about. There is no harm in trying is there? Some of them may just be temporary changes until you get back on your feet

http://www.stoozing.com/calculator/soa.php Make sure you choose to format for MSE when you're done.

(From the stickies at the top of the forum. You're posting on "debt-free wannabe" BTW)

Yes I would do it like that. And the same for any other costs that are not every month (so e.g. road tax put in 1/12 of the annual cost or 1/6 of a 6monthly cost etc).

Surely this will make a big difference going forwards?

Yes it will in the long run. In the short term his contract ended on 31st December, he has been paid for December's basic hours and will get any payment for unsocial hours at the end of this month, which will be a very small amount as he didn't do any unsocial hours when he cut his hours. His new pay date is the 10th of the month but he will obviously need to work this month to get paid 10th Feb. So he will be going 6 weeks with no pay.

And weekly costs should be multiplied by 52 and divided by 12 to get the monthly costs (not just multiplied by 4). ;)

You moved to forward your career, and your husband presumably agreed to this. To be honest, my/ our situation only changed from that I described above because I took steps to move my career forward, in my case going to university as a mature student with 3 children and all the costs that entailed, when we were already in debt  That could I suppose have (and probably was in some quarters) been construed as selfish, or at least unwise, but my OH worked long hours in a low paid job, we lived in very poor quality, damp tied accommodation and didn't have enough money to live on properly (there were no tax credits or anything like that then), so I knew that it was up to me to do something or we would always be stuck in the same position. I was doing it partly for personal satisfaction, yes, but mainly to help my family in the longer term, just as you intended.

But you know, it worked out in the end - with the degree, I was eventually able to get a much better job(s), pay off the debt and save for our future. I am sure your situation will improve soon, please try to keep ploughing on and be as positive as you can. You have dealt with the immediate problem, and you are also aware now that you are almost certainly not the only one in this position at your workplace - so you could only possibly be 'a failure' if all these other people are too. And we all know that they aren't, don't we? These are both positive outcomes.

Unfortunately the OP's career may not improve as a result of the move due to other issues.

His maintenance has been reassessed. CSA drives me mad, it's so complicated! His amount has changed several times as they have suspended payment several times due to 'receiving information' that his circumstances have changed (turns out his ex keeps contacting them informing them that we are in receipt of all kinds of things that we have never even applied for!). Due to these suspensions he keeps building up at least 2 months of arrears (and they have also asked said ex to discontinue her accusations as they have been proven to be false every time but have contacted OH on 2 occasions since August to request proof of earnings as she has again informed them of false changes  )

On a better note he does have a job here, he started Monday :j
