I'm going to be blunt here.

You don't have a 'beauty career'. You have aspirations to work in this field, but little else. Your only work experience is retail. Most jobs in this field are likely to be self-employed but you show no evidence of having explored this as an option.

Jobseeker's Allowance is there to support people looking for a job. It is not 'Find-Your-Ideal-Jobseeker's Allowance. You should be looking for any suitable work, not just what you wish to do.

If you can wipe your hands to perform beauty therapies, you can wipe your hands to do filing, use a mouse and answer the phone.

Instead of viewing this as an opportunity to boost your confidence and learn new skills you have chosen to throw up barriers. You need to change your attitude - work is work, earning your own money is better than being on benefits and this experience will provide you with an invaluable reference. In addition, most jobs need an element of admin work. If you intend to work in beauty you will most likely be self employed and you will definitely need admin skills for that.

And as for being unhappy getting on early buses to get there because you don't want to go - you do realise most people don't want to go to work either, don't you? I don't much like getting on a 7am train to go to work but I do it because I have to.

Adereterial, i echo your thought exactly.

JSA should always be the last resort and not the alternative is has become to work.

As I said I don't mind doing it but working 30 hours for 4 weeks in somewhere you hate and offers no skills you need for career path isn't really fair.

To be honest fairness has nothing to do with it and if you're in the job market you're going to need to adjust your expectations. I think you'll find that an awful lot of people work in excess of 30 hours a week in jobs they hate just to pay the bill. You only have to do it for 4 weeks. Suck it up.

'Do I have an legal rights to fight against the placement?' Of course you have the legal right not to do the placement at all. You don't even need to fight anyone over it. Just don't take the allowance, then no-one can force you to do it.

It's Tax Credits that has become the alternative to work (while also using WTC to avoid the job centre and mandatory work programmes).
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

Hi thanks for the advice guys I went to my induction today with the A4e company who set up placement. There was about 10 in the class and a few others had been given placements already as well and weren't happy. The woman in charge say if we had an issue to speak to her at the end and try and sort it out. I spoke to her at the end and she said even though yes it is a long way to go 3 hours a day to travel but its part of the agreement at their isn't many places due to only being charity work now as the companies like poundland, tesco etc aren't allowed to do the placements as they should be paying people to do the job not free labour.

Anyway the woman was nice and said I would be doing mostly customer service and talking to the customers whilst the firemen fitted equipment. However I asked about barnardos as they are upset they are going to lose me for a month when they desperately need me. She said do you volunteer and I told her yes twice a week since christmas. She said does the job centre know? I replied yes and I had to fill in a form saying I was volunteering. The woman said you shouldn't have been sent here if you volunteer the whole reason behind the scheme is to give you work experience and a reference at the end of it. I have both due to volunteering (of my own back may I add, I spent ages asking the job centre to help me find a voluntary place and they didn't want to know so got off my !!!! and asked myself.)

Anyway the short of it all is that the woman rang my job centre they said they didn't know I volunteered (i've told them a million times and had issues with them about it as they try and make sign on during my work time and i've also completed the offical written paper) anyway i've been referred back to the job centre and dont have to do the placement.

Am very relieved but this has given me a big push that I desperately want a job and anywhere will do. I've just applied for loads of christmas jobs coming up early so hoping something good comes of that.

I also am going to volunteer at a local salon now am off for summer holidays. I already do freelance work for free for my profilo and have a blog which does tutorials and reviews. All done in my spare time as well as going to college, dealing with job centre and volunteering. I have the experience just need the experience in the job world now but i've so put off as had telephone interviews and all say not had enough sales experience but how do you get that if no one will give you a chance.

Thanks for all your advice and this has really given me a kick up the bum to do something and stop procrastinating. The time I spend volunteering and signing on attending bloody advisor meetings and looking for jobs I could be working and earning a wage.

I'm not sure I understand when you say you are claiming JSA but are off for the summer holidays?
Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama ;)

I get the impression she is claiming and attending college part time? Can't be a new claimant if she is being sent on MWA.

Such a shame that she has not taken this opportunity to gain new skills and confidence :(

Yeah I attended college part time but course is over now so I have free time to be able to volunteer in the beauty sector or other skill. I already feel i've learnt and gained the skills needed for retail and customer service. I will be attending college in september for level 3 and hoping to teach in the future but need 5 years experience before that. Anyway alot of students jobs are customer service/ retail due to only being avaliable evening or weekends.

I didn't have the chance for the opportunity they referred me back when I told them I volunteer. Clearly they thought it would be a waste of time and someone who actually hasn't got any work skills or references could benefit from the placement. Alot of people had to travel pretty far to placement as their isn't many places that offer them now.

Am not going to waste my summer holidays though doing nothing am going to hand my cv's out to salons and if no jobs on offer then volunteer. As I said alot of christmas jobs are coming up now so am getting in there early. I have experience and voluntary work and also a qualifaction thats going to help me hopefully and more confidence this year. Plus the job centre has got such a joke that I can't stand to be there anymore. I try my hardest and do everything they and feel like am being punished most of the time. I know they are trying to get you off benefits by why don't they help you get a job not keep shoving you on schemes that don't help. Am only going on my own experience and also articles that have been wrote. Seriously google mandatory work job centre and nothing but bad press comes up about it.

I think you are not telling the full truth here, you can volunteer in the charity shop thats fine but it has to take second place to everything else.
You cannot continue to claim JSA,volunteer in a beauty salon unless the employer either signs a work trial agreement or a full time 8 week work experience. The benfit centre will be prefectly in the rights to take notional earnings from your JSA. Volunteering can only be for a non profit making organisation or charity, a beauty salon is a business.
You need to use this 'spare time' to get a job, what exactly are you planning on doing septemeber? Is the course full or part time? How are you funding the course?

Benefits are not an alternative to work, I have no issues you progressing and furthering you career but get a job and support yourself whilst you do this. Any fast food restaurant, pubs and bars all need people evenings and weekends and this will allow you to study and volunteer.

It is not the jobcentre's job to get you a job, you are paid to do this. There are there to ensure you are meeting your JSA obligations, then they help you to help yourself to get a job. If that means 'shoving you on a scheme' then so be it.

I saw someone today who has been claiming for 6 years and has not had an interview for 7 months, I have refered him to a two week course to start from the beginning looking at his C.V. his jobsearch, spec letters, interview techniques and motivation, His reply' I don't need this course its a waste of time' my reply 'well why are you still unemployed then?' I'm sorry but if people are motivated and really want a job then they would accept all offers of help.
