It's such bad form - he would have gotten more than the 8 hours back from your hubby just by saying yes.
Exactly. Hence hubby now only working to his contact. That won't bode well, & he'll get sent to coventry by his boss, but there's nothing he can do about it & he can't even issue a written warning for working as per the contract! It's a shame, because if employers are amenable to the odd things that are thrown into the lives of their employees, loyalty ensues & work is a happy place. Sadly he can't tell his boss to do one because we have a mortgage etc and need him employed, but he will be looking for something else. I asked him what was different about the Olympic tickets being purchased at work, and he said staff were told that as it was a 'once in a lifetime opportunity' they could do so. Apparently being invited to Maida Vale Studios to record a live set for a Radio 1 Show isn't.

I'm sorry that he's missed this opportunity but was it really realistic to expect to get a day off with only one day as notice. I'm constantly amazed that people see nothing wrong with having their mobile phone on all the time. It should be switched off at work and anyone who has to get in touch for an emergency can call the work surely.
Radio 1 only had our landline number & his mobile number. There was no-one home to answer the landline so they phoned his mobile. I think if someone was asking for the next day off because the weather forecast said it would be sunny so they wanted to go to the beach, then the answer would and should be 'no'. But to deny someone a fantastic opportunity like this is just mean and horrible, and I think that most reasonable bosses would say yes, as long as the time was made up.0 -

I don't disagree that many bosses would have given the time off.
A message could have been left on either or both of the landline or mobile phone though.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

I think OhReally has hit the nail on the head - is there anything in his contract re: personal calls or, more to the point, is there anything re: idle chit chat in the office.
My guess is your hubby wouldn't have been so upset at the refusal for holiday at short notice if the boss hadn't spouted the other crap.Data protection is there for you, not for companies to hide behind0 -
The only part I see is unfair is that others could buy olympics tickets on work time. If the culture of the organisation is as the manager has enforced it's perfectly fair. If some are treated differently it isn't. Whether or not this sort of atmosphere is conducive to productivity is a matter of debate, and in my opinion depends very much on the industry the OPs OH works in.
Many organisations would put him on disciplinary for using his phone. I would be in trouble for having my phone on me at work, and certainly for having memory sticks on me.0 -

Presumably the production team wanted an answer pretty fast; to arrange the session the day after. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
