Hasn't annoyed his boss. Boss is just a !!!!!!! And probably jealous!

Come to think of it, most of the bosses I've had would have either said "Hell Yeah! Go for it", tried to blag their way along with him, or at the very least relished the chance to bask in a little bit of reflected glory.

The only environments I've seen that in is a working on secure defence projects or on a trading floor.

The OP's hubby should find a new job, carefully noting any irregularities of a financial, legal or health and safety nature that I am sure, as a responsible citizen, he will feel duty bound to report to the relevant authorities....

I work for the NHS and have done for 17 years. We have always been able to keep our mobiles on. Important things don't just happen before 9 and after 5.

Totally counter-productive, unhappy staff if he had a supportive boss, there may even have been an opportunity to name check the company. it doesn't matter how you look at it, getting a reputation for meanness does not help your credibility as a business.

The only part I see is unfair is that others could buy olympics tickets on work time. If the culture of the organisation is as the manager has enforced it's perfectly fair. If some are treated differently it isn't. Whether or not this sort of atmosphere is conducive to productivity is a matter of debate, and in my opinion depends very much on the industry the OPs OH works in.

Many organisations would put him on disciplinary for using his phone. I would be in trouble for having my phone on me at work, and certainly for having memory sticks on me.

I can't see how having a memory stick in your pocket with a tune on that your colleague has asked you for so they can listen at home is a problem. No different to taking in a recipe for someone!

Yeah, having a shout out on Radio 1! Free advertising! Idiot boss. Poor hubby, he's really down this evening, especially cos his boss told him he has to choose between his job and his hobby. I really feel for him :(

You can't store data on a recipe. Very different.

Other than a secure defence site, I can't see a problem with a memory stick - currently I work in finance and data transfer out of the company has serious compliance issues - so all the USB ports are locked out.

Don't forget that you can use an MP3 player as a memory stick as well.

So why no phones and memory sticks? A proper reason or just someone willy waving?

Mainly reputational risk if DPA were breached.

If someone really wanted to get data out of the office, then they would just do it. Data stick ban or no data stick ban.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

A memory stick handed to someone to take home to listen to the tune upon it should not be an issue, its just plain ridiculous to raise it as an issue in his employment. His boss told him off for it because its to do with his hobby, his music, which he is forbidden from discussing at work as from today. We're wondering if the girls in the office will be told they can't discuss the previous nights soaps now, or the men discussing how many pints they downed at the weekend (on a Tuesday cos they're all too hangover on a Monday to function properly!). It's 2012 for goodness sake, not 1912!!_
