Previous owner still insuring house

And a year later, another renewal has arrived. We're in the middle of a remortgage on our house - with the company that the previous owner has the house insured through.

Imagine if the left hand could see what the right hand was doing, and they'd realise that the person insuring it isn't the same as the person paying the mortgage!

Most banks/building societies don't offer insurance which is underwritten by them, normally the 'brand' is sold to a broker who will sell insurance.

Nationwide Insurance used to be a brand of UKI, nothing to do with the building society. Not sure who backs it now.

Lloyd's insurance isn't the bank, can't remember who backs it though.
  • People so stupid they don't check all their DDs each month have no-one to blame but themselves. No surprise they lost their house to the bank. You've done more than many would so your conscience is clear. The lack of care shown by the insurance company is about what you'd expect, they just exist to make money, not care about customers. Not sure what else you can do really other than forward it to the solicitors used to sell the house to you and hope they can trace the previous owners details.

What steps would you expect the insurers to take in these circumstances?

I'd guess the only contact details the insurer has for the policy holder is that address.

Bear in mind that , from the insurers perspective, the OP could be...
    • A prankster who tries to cancel other people's home insurance for a laugh
    • An aggrieved spouse, who is trying to cause as much havoc as possible for their spouse
      etc

The outcome could be devastating if the insurer cancelled the policy, without being sure that's what the policy holder wanted.

I'm pretty sure the previous owners of our house are still paying for British Gas homecare for our address. We've had 2 yearly renewals now citing 'last years premium'. (almost £500 a year!)

I'm guessing when they see the direct debit on their bank statement they assume the cover is for their new address when in reality they forgot to transfer it.

There's nothing you can do. The relevant company simply won't talk to you due to data protection laws. Don't worry about it.
