I think you have to go into branch or you both need to go to get it done.

Why not ask the bank to be sure.

Easiest is probably to close the joint account and to get yourself a new sole one. I am 99.99% certain that both account holders need to agree to the closure, and it is quite possible that you can only do that in Branch. You need to check your T&Cs.

Certainly will need both parties to either close or remove one from the account. As to going into branch. I would think most would do it over the phone, so long as you both can clear security.

I had a joint account with an ex.

The bank refused to let me close it without his signature even though I was the only signatory to the account.

I just withdrew all the funds in there and left it.

The bank ended up closing it themselves as an inactive account.

Agreed, OP just needs to ring the bank and ask, they will advise them if it could be done over the phone or sign a form and post it or required to go in branch.

I went through this a few years ago

With the accounts we closed both of us had to be present at the bank to close it down

One account was not closed but converted to her sole name. Again we both had to be present at the bank although part of that may have been that the account was overdrawn and she had to agree to take it solely on before my name could be removed from it

With Santander I had to go into branch.

Luckily my wife could come in with me, as ideally they want 2 signatures (I wanted to keep the account open)

It's a lot more difficult I'm "messy" situations

A lot will depend on the state of the account.
If it is overdrawn, they will not do it unless the account holder that is staying on the account has credit worthiness to be able to take on the overdraft in their own name.

I've recently taken my ex's name off our joint account just by phoning up and answering security questions. However, they could see that the account hadn't been used in a long time which may have been why I didn't need to go into branch.
