I think someone mentioned it earlier but try and find a shop that will let you try before you buy. That way you'll be able to find out what the bike can handle in terms of potholes.
In the sub £600 category for a road bike that needs to be able to contend with less than perfect road conditions, something like the Genesis CDA 10 is worth a look at.0 -
