    Hi All

This has just recently happened to me on the company purchase of an iMac, I incurred a £74.22 foreign purchase fee that Natwest refused to take liability for and apple where adamant that they had taken the funds to a uk bank account with a uk vat number that was on the invoice. Thanks to this article I have now reopened my complaint case with Natwest to claim back my fee and it is being looked at. Fingers crossed hopefully now after 5 hours of phone calls between apple and Natwest they will refund the fee to my account

The Apple store's terms do say
The Apple Online Store, the Apple Store mobile app and the Apple Contact Centre are operated by Apple Distribution International, which is a company incorporated in the Republic of Ireland with its registered office at Hollyhill Industrial Estate, Hollyhill, Cork, Ireland and with registered number 470672 at the Companies Registration Office of Ireland.
It therefore seems unsurprising that you card was charged in the Republic of Ireland, and your bank's non-UK fee has been applied.

I've bought a lot of things from Apple UK online and never been charged fees. How else are you supposed to order? If other banks don't do this then surely it's just NatWest/RBS interpreting the 'rules' to suit themselves.

Use a different card? Most banks don't charge a fee for purchases overseas. RBS and Natwest do.

Some customers say they were told the cause of the mix-up is because Apple UK's distribution centre is in Cork in the Republic of Ireland – though the banks have declined to say what's going wrong.

An RBS group spokesperson said: "Our customers should not be charged foreign transactions fees when making purchases from Apple UK.

"We are looking into the issue and working to fix it as quickly as possible. We will also be actively identifying impacted customers and making sure they are not left out of pocket."

They are saying they don't so it looks like yet another screw up by RBS and NatWest. Even if they did it's a poor decision on their behalf.

If you like paying £1000 for a phone, can't see why should worry about more fees.. you're already being ripped off by Apple anyway..
  • I can see why this would happen, Apple UK being domiciled in Ireland and all that, but this is a bank that still thinks weekends don't exist. Why else would I be prevented from making a transfer on a Saturday because I would exceed my £20K daily transfer limit. Which related to transfers made on the Friday.
