Personally I like the cruise but you can't see areas like Montmatre from a boat.

I couldn't visit Paris and not see Montmatre.

How does metro work, is it similar to London where you just pay and then it's capped at a days ticket?

    No

    https://parisbytrain.com/paris-metro-tickets-what-to-buy/

Day/week/month tickets are available, see the link. Some require a bit of forward planning (Navigo Decouvert requires you to provide a photo at point of first purchase)

Friend of mine arrived in Paris on Monday and foolishly paid €22 for a return airport ticket to get to Gare du Nord and then back again at the end of the trip. For about the same price, he could have bought the Navigo Decouvert to cover his travel for a whole week. Numpty.

As an aside, it was announced yesterday they are getting rid of paper tickets

No. We took Bradders advice and bought this

    https://www.transilien.com/en/page-editoriale/using-the-navigo-decouverte-card

We just went and got a new passport photo and went to the ticket office and they sorted us out.
We had to get it on Monday morning though as they run out on Sunday. It is a little bit like an Oyster card, but it lasts all week. We were there till Thursday, but we went all over with it, and it paid for itself, because a train ticket from GDG to GDN cost us 10 euros each. So we did save a few quid by purchasing.
Other than that, the Metro is similar to London. But, if you aren't sure, ask one of the staff. We wanted to go to the tower on the first night, and one of them very helpfully gave us a map and highlighted the best station where to get on and off at certain places.
Oh yeah, and be aware of people pestering for money when on them. It had it's fair share of beggars because some of the trains are just one long train, not seperate carriages like in London.

One difference to the tube is that lines have numbers and the destination for each direction, not the direction northbouund, etc. you get in London. Stations usually have a window where you can buy tickets and ask for advice. They will print out directions for you if you wish.

Some metro lines have separate carriages and others have wide connections between the carriages (just as in London).

    Thanks so much al.

We are arriving sat midday and coming back sun.

Also going to do the cruise one day, so which is the best offer for one days metro?

It seems might as well buy the €22 euro week pass even for just one day, which is absurd.

I think the one day metro tickets wouldnt cover you for the airport journey, its seems a lot of metro systems charge a lot more for the airport journey (Barcelona do it also).

So yes, get the Navigo Decouvert one, take a passport photo. Even the Paris Visite ticket to cover the Greater Paris area for 2 days is €38.35

This article on the Navigo Decouvert appears useful and gives you the leverage if a vendor decides you aren't from round here.

It says the size of the ND photo is 3cm tall by 2.5cm wide but also that there are usually machines handy and the vendors usually have scissors ready, so even if you don't have the perfect photo ready in advance, you can get something sorted.

Oh, hang on, you cant buy a Navigo Decouvert to cover you for the rest of that calendar week if you arrive on Saturday. Sales end on the Thursday and then they start selling the next week from the Friday onwards.

Sorry! You will have to look at the other options.

As for vendors being arsey not selling it to non-French people, I imagine at the airport there are no such issues. I certainly didnt have any, nor did the OP.
