I'm looking at 3 year old Astras/Insignias. There are plenty around and relatively cheap. Any experience - good, bad, indifferent? Or are there better alternatives? It has to be an automatic and I don't mind diesel. The last Vauxhall I drove was my dad's Chevette.:)

This one looks good for 10000 and the garage has good reviews

I would check if it uses a timing chain. And parts should be cheap. Though you need to test drive it and push the throttle to test it.

Though it may have a scratch at the back on the right and near the front registration and missing a fog light so you should be able to lower the price. But they are a Vauxhall specialist and you can look at other Vauxhall cars.

As per the title - If you are looking for personal opinions on Vauxhall then my 2010 Corsa diesel 55k miles is absolutely brilliant. I bought at 3 years old - feels solid, drives well, feels safe.

Cosmetics - The paintwork on it is definitely top quality as it always comes up fantastic with very little effort, the alloy wheels are also remarkably clean and free of marks whereas the other two cars of ours with alloy wheels are an absolute nightmare to clean.

Oil change every year, had one new set of glow plugs + the brakes and tyres as required but apart from those its low cost and trouble free for me. £30/year tax and I wonder if the diesel Astra you are looking at is the same? I am looking to sell it at the end of this year for various reasons but I really will be sad to see it go.

    Hope this helps

Research the specific engine your thinking of buying as plenty of Vauxhalls are good, plenty are dreadful.

They'll be better now that they are rebadged Peugeots instead of rebadged Opels ;)

I live in a Vauxhall factory town so there are a LOT around.
The amount of smoking, rattly Vauxhalls I see is enough to prevent me from buying one. They are cheap for a reason, rubbish cars.

We've just worked out we've had 10 between us over the years, and they've never given us a days trouble and not missed a beat. Great value for money in our opinion. 2.0 TDi Astra (J) went really well, but we changed to a late 1.4 Turbo petrol (J) due to reduced milage.

yup that's the sort of thing I'm looking at.

Also good point about looking at specific engines. One of my other thoughts is that since most police forces use them they can't be that bad...

Whats's the mpg like in the 1.4 petrol? I would probably prefer petrol but not if it's going to cost a lot more to run

My sister still runs around in her 14 year old Astra that she has had since new.

It still looks good and runs well.

It has had routine maintenance and servicing but she has not had any large expense with it.

It's the 140 bhp one we've got. We get about 37mpg running local urban. But just done a long 175 mile duel carriageway run and got 45mpg, fully laden boot, 2 passengers. You do have to push it a bit to get the performance compared to the diesel, but it's plenty for what we need!!

We have the manuals though ...sorry, just read that you're after automatic. We've never had one of them, so have no idea if the gearboxes are any good.
