Universal Credit and Carers Allowance

Hi

I recently quit my job to look after my mother.

I am claiming Universal Credit and waiting for a decision on Carers Allowance (I rang today and was told my claim would be processed in a couple of days).

I am just wondering if Carers Allowance shows up on my Universal Credit account? So when I log in will my carers show in the payment section?

New to this.

Thanks

    Hi Danni,

My carer's allowance shows up on my payment breakdown. It shows how much I get from UC for being a carer, then how much I receive from Carer's Allowance and then shows how much they deduct :) I don't understand why they give you a carer element but pay carers separately and then deduct one from the other but someone who does know will no doubt be along to explain it :) I hope that makes sense! I am still finding UC a bit confusing :) x

To claim the Carer's element in UC you do not have to be receiving Carer's Allowance. You only have to meet the criteria of the 'cared for' receiving the correct benefit (mid rate dare DLA. standard/enhanced daily living PIP or AA) and your caring for 35 hrs minimum a week.

Also there is no earnings limit when receiving the carer's element but the earnings are deducted from UC like any other earnings.

So, you cannot receive the money from carer's allowance and the carer's element so the CA received is counted as income and deducted from the UC.

    Thanks for replying.

So will carers payments only show up when my UC payments do? I have just received my statement on my UC account for UC so will i have to wait until next month to see carers payments show up? If that makes sense ha.

    Thank you.

There is a specific section for you to declare your careers allowance in the UC online account. You can also declare that you are caring for someone. Do this as soon as you can. Don’t trust the ‘system’ to look after it for you.
  • Hi was wondering if anyone could help me ...I've just been awarded carers allowance and it backdated my question is...will the whole of my back pay come of this month's universal credit panicing as if it does my universal credit payment won't be enough to cover my rent never mind feed my kids and keep them warm

You need to tell UC that you have been awarded Carer's Allowance.

Have you previously been getting the carer element in your UC? If not you may be able to get your UC recalculated back to the same date as your Carer's Allowance start date. This will reduce the amount of the overpayment. If you are already getting the carer element then any payment of carer's Allowance will be deducted in full.

Under Uc there is no financial advantage to claiming Carer's Allowance because it is deducted in full and you can receive the carer element in UC without being in receipt of Carer's Allowance.

Not clear why you will not have enough money. Even if all of the Carers Allowance is deducted you will have just received the Carer's Allowance so you you will have the same amount of money in total.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • Universal credit have been informed I'm caring for someone and I wasn't told that my carers allowance would effect my universal credit till today so when I get my ca back pay I ended up having to buy a fridge freezer and washer as both broke two months ago and no I haven't received carers element in my uc

It might be wise to call Universal Credit next week just to check that they have verified the carers element following you reporting this change.

If they have verified it, then it should be noted in your next statement.

Universal Credit will not backdate carers element to the date you were awarded Carers Allowance. Carers element will start from the date you advised Universal Credit that you were caring for someone disabled and it is verified.

Reason it is not backdated, is that you may have previously completed a Universal Credit disclosure where you said no to the question about caring for someone. And caring for someone affects the basis of the claim i.e. The claimant commitment you agreed to.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
