I was with them when they closed their mobile phone unit down, now their energy unit. They will probably close down Argos too, maybe they should just stick to Supermarkets.

Sainsburys Energy is a trading name of British Gas - nothing to do with Sainsburys, except they agreed the name could be used under licence.

Argos is owned and operated by Sainsburys.

White labels, such as Sainsburys, were always going to struggle after Ofgem ordered that their operating company (in this case British Gas) had to include a white label tariff on the main supplier's bills, if the white label was cheaper for the main supplier's customer.
Hence, presumably why Sainsburys prices were much the same as British Gas tariffs in recent times.
Edit: As predicted by Cardew at the time :)

I very much doubt that whole reason for them buying Argos is to use up some retail space in some larger stores and to attract people into the stores with impulse buying

They also shut down Sainsburys mobile 3 years ago another white label. They still have the bank though as I use it

Perhaps 2 of the important questions that may concern existing Sainsbury Energy customers
    Q. What will happen to my current Sainsbury’s Energy tariff?

    A. Your current tariff will remain the same, but it will move across to British Gas. When your tariff is coming to an end British Gas will contact you to let you know.
    Q. What happens if I have an open complaint with Sainsbury’s Energy?

    A. Your complaint will stay open on your account when you move to British Gas. It will be handled using the same complaints procedure and guidelines as Sainsbury’s Energy.

Argos will not be closed, they bought Argos because they liked the same day delivery option from Argos, so order by 6pm and get it delivered same day by 10pm for £3.95.
  • As a Sainsbury's Energy customer why can't I move penalty free in April rather than being dumped in British gas ? After all THEY are leaving Me not the other way around...John N
