Gap in no claims discount

I ran a "camper van in conversion" for nearly three years, which meant I had to use a specialist insurer called Adrian Flux who "don't do no claims discount".

Now I've sold the van and bought a little car, I'm struggling to find an insurer who will recognise my 10+ years of no claims discount, because of the nearly three year gap.

My old broker (who sadly doesn't do motor insurance any more) tells me there are companies out there which will go back three years, but couldn't tell me offhand which ones. I've identified about a dozen already which stick at a two year gap. :(

Has anyone found a company which will accept a three year gap?

    Aviva used to accept upto 3 years but may of changed in the last 5 years.

    Have you tried to just get quotes based on your claims history ?

    As a rule of thumb, NCB "dies" after two years between policies - so you really are going to be trying to find the exception who will accept it.


    Even then, forget "10+" years - you'll probably be looking at about 5/6 years being viewed as maximum.


    What sort of quotes are you getting with zero NCB? If your record is good, it's unlikely to be a big issue on a small car. I had zero NCB for similar reasons a few years ago - all my policies had been classics - and found that my general risk profile was good enough that, even without, I was getting <£300 fully comp policies on a low-risk car.

    Adrian Flux are a broker, not an insurer.

    I would be surprised if the actual insurer never offered a NCD.

    If they really don't, you could try and get a letter from Adrian Flux or the insurer to say you had not made any claims. A number of insurers will accept this, it's usually used when coming off company cars.
