Energy deal

Hi,
Am trying to source the best energy supplier for a 12 month contract for a six bed student house. Meter supplied, dual fuel, no idea about energy consumption as yet. I am torn between Bulb and First Utility. For the latter the standing charge is really low for Gas and as a student house is unoccupied for their holidays that is quite tempting. Any ideas on this as going round and round in circles? Thank you in anticipation!

You need to do your sums - your bill is a mix of units and standing charge both plus VAT.

You need to estimate your consumption - what is the heating, are there electric showers ?

Whatever you do - read your meter regularly and share the costs as you go.

When you leave make sure you do final readings.

Students tend not to be very economical with energy.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Students tend to use their bedrooms as sitting/study rooms, as well as boudoirs!

Bear in mind that heating systems in 'normal' houses are designed so that bedrooms are not as warm as living rooms. Thus it is a common problem that students use additional electrical heaters in their rooms, and electricity bills tend to be very high.

Experience, reinforced by many posts on MSE, shows that you need a very clear policy on payment of bills. Girlfriend/boyfriend staying overnight a lot - people not going home during holidays etc etc are the cause of endless arguments.
