Loads on Amazon. Sandisk clip seems to get a good rep, that's £22 or so.

People still buy bespoke MP3 players rather than just use their phones?

I did as I only use my phone {not a smart one} for emergencies so I am unable to listen to music through it;)

Some of the budget phones have built-in FM radio that uses earplug cable as an antenna. If the phone itself can't play MP3s you can get mini FM transmitters - connect them to the MP3 headphone socket, set a frequency not in use by any station in the area, start the MP3 player going and tune the phone in. Hey presto, music. Simples. *squeak*

The point is it can be done. That's what I was getting at. The fact it needs three boxes is arbitrary :)
