Solid wood bed

Can anyone recommend any retailers where I can purchase a contemporary bed made from solid wood rather than cheap MDF veneered wood? I'm based in the Midlands btw.

I've stumbled upon Oak Furniture Land however the reviews on their customer services doesn't sound too good so I've currently got Get Laid Beds and Natural Bed Company on my list to check out. A long shot but has anyone purchased anything from these places? Thoughts on them?

I can't comment on those two retailers but, if you are in the south, I can recommend A World of Furniture.

They have stores in Blandford, Poole, Salisbury and Southampton.

We have purchased a few items (not beds) from the Southampton store and are very pleased with them.

They are better quality than OFL with sensible prices.

You could find a local carpenter/furniture maker. Beds are quite simple to make even with turned posts

I purchased a bed from the Natural Bed Company about 12-14 years ago; very good quality. I contacted them for some replacement connectors which I'd misplaced when I moved home. The bed had been discontinued, but they were able to sort me out.

So good customer service, too.

i got this bed in 2006 and it seems really good - it has good quality beech sprung slats https://www.naturalbedcompany.co.uk/product/malabar-wooden-bed/
there is also a company called abaca where i got a mattress but they also do good beds http://abacaorganic.co.uk/product-category/beds/contemporary/

What kind of mattress do you use with it? Memory foam, latex, pocket spring etc.? I'm thinking of trialling one of the new memory foam mattress companies in a box like Leesa and I was wondering if it would be okay on their sprung slats or whether to opt for the flat slats.

Also their Malabar bed is on my shortlist of beds. Is the headboard thick? I was wondering if you could upload a photo of the bed? If not, no worries.

Bought mine from John Lewis a year or so ago. Price was favourable to OFL and the like, bed may well have been on offer but still a lot on there seems to be priced well compared to the furniture stores that advertise on TV.

i have got the abaca ramsey latex mattress http://abacaorganic.co.uk/product/ramsey/ - had it 4 years and hard to beat as i'm not so keen on foam or sprung mattresses - if i was getting another bed i would probably go with abaca - they have solid slats (not sprung slats) but i'm not sure there are any real benefits to sprung slats - the only issue with the malabar is the cam type fixings to secure the joints as the headboard does creak sometimes so needs occasional tightening - the malabar is very solid and thick and is certainly a top quality bed which should last many decades

I used a futon, so it might be worth asking their advice once you've decided. I would assume flat slats for a mattress normally.
