Cities most worth visiting in 'Eastern' Europe?

My friend and I are planning on doing some travelling around Europe this summer. In recent years I've been lucky enough to travel considerably around Western Europe (West of Germany/Italy), so we are now looking at heading further East and/or South.

Are there any cities or areas in Central/Eastern/Southern Europe that you'd recommend visiting? We are looking at a range of activities from days sightseeing to days relaxing so all suggestions are welcome!

Thank you :)

    Romania.....Transylvania in particular.

Am flying to Bucharest on 4 June, and the following morning starting a 3 week four centre self-guide tour by train.

Did Bosnia & Herzegovina last October, thoroughly enjoyed Mostar and Sarajevo. A beautiful country with a sad past.

In April we're off to Macedonia.....Skopje, Lake Ohrid, and Bitola.

Currently on the Med coast of Turkey.:)
  • eDicky We were planning on travelling by train but depending on our route, we may choose to drive. We can also fly if the cities we wish to visit are quite spread out!
  • Oh you definitely sound like you know what you're talking about PompeyPete! Thank you very much, I will have a look into some of those places.
You are now the second person to suggest Bosnia and Herzegovina to me, definitely worth a look. Thank you!

No-one has mentioned Kyev... I passed through once and was entranced by the view of 'onion' domes from the train.

Baltic Coast of !!!8216;east!!!8217; Germany around Rostock is worth a visit. Amazing beaches and beautful coastal towns and villages.

Its difficult to get your head around how it must have been just 30 years ago.

    Good rail service from Berlin.
